In my English class, my peers and I studied in depth about Greek mythology, through
popular Greek characters. This project opened my eyes to a whole new belief system that people
had like in the heroic poems of the Odyssey by Homer. By researching the demi-god Achilles, I
became familiar with a new ideology that I have not been familiarized with until reading of
Mythological works like the Odyssey in my English class. Reading the heroic poem, The
Odyssey opened my eyes to a different point of view on a certain subject that carried over into
the research project of our character. By researching in depth about the character of the demi-god
Achilles, I increased my researching skills and knowledge about Greek Mythology.
I have really grown in my understanding on the Greek mythological topic, by researching
every single detail about Achilles for a final presentation at the end of the project. This project
was unique in showing creativity by dressing up as the characters of research and by
emphasizing on the amount of research it takes to make the final presentation enjoyable for all.
My peers and I were dressed in draped sheets and armor, to represent the characters we all have
been researching on. Throughout my research I learned interesting facts about Achilles conquests
against the Trojans, and his seeking of revenge for the country of Troy, which later led to his
death with a deadly arrow piercing the heal of his foot, which was Achilles only weak spot. The
interesting facts from this project made the researching aspect much more enjoyable and simple
to follow.
The amount of research in the project has set the tone on other research assignments I
will face in the future. I know the topic of Greek mythology might seem silly, but in truth each
story of Greek mythology has complicated story lines and figures, that demand a lot of research
in order to fully understand. Many characters like mine had more than one story line that has
developed over the years and being familiar with every detail of Achilles made my presentation
worthwhile. I have truly grown in my researching capabilities and knowledge on a whole new
topic, I had no real information about at the start of this project. I really enjoyed this project and
highly recommend the upcoming freshmen to find the joy of learning of new topics, like I did.
This project was only fun because my peers and I, found the fun on finding new information to
talk about.
