Agency Project

Peer Mediation

Peer mediation is problem solving by youth

with youth.
Peer mediation existed at McLauchlin
Elementary in the past, but it was many
years ago. That is why I chose to train the
students for my agency project.

Cont.

First, permission slips were sent home to select

students.
Once the permission slips were returned, the
training took place over a period of seven weeks. I
met with the students on Tuesday mornings from
8:00-8:30.
There was a total of eight students: 4 fourth
graders and 4 fifth graders. Each of the students
had their own folder with a peer mediation packet
inside.

Cont.

I began the first meeting

by defining peer mediation
and conflict, so that the
students understood what
their role was going to be.
I explained that peer
mediators never meet with
students alone (they will
have a partner, and there
will always be an adult
present).

Cont.

There was a different activity planned for the each

of the meetings, but I had the students practice
their peer mediation scripts starting at week 3 until
the completion of the training. They were allowed
to take the scripts home, that way they could
practice at home as well.
My field supervisor and I also gave the students a
smaller script to be used specifically for meetings
with their peers, in case they got nervous and
forgot.

Cont.

For the final meeting, each student

received a certificate of completion and a tshirt.
