givehissonacameraforhisthirteenthbirthdaywouldprovetobeawisemove:Kubrick
became an avid photographer, and would often make trips around New York taking
photographswhichhewoulddevelopinafriend'sdarkroom.Aftersellinganunsolicited
photographtoLookMagazine,Kubrickbegantoassociatewiththeirstaffphotographers.
Inthenextfewyears,Kubrickhadregularassignmentsfor"Look",andwouldbecomea
voraciousmoviegoer.
In1950KubricksankhissavingsintomakingthedocumentaryDayoftheFight
(1950).ThiswasfollowedbyseveralshortcommissioneddocumentariesFlyingPadre
(1951),andTheSeafarers(1952),butbyattractinginvestorsKubrickwasabletomake
FearandDesire(1953)inCalifornia.Despitemixedreviewsforthefilmitself,Kubrick
receivedgoodnoticesforhisobviousdirectorialtalents.Kubrick'snexttwofilmsKiller's
Kiss(1955)andTheKilling(1956),broughthimtotheattentionofHollywood,andin
1957directedKirkDouglasinPathsofGlory(1957).DouglaslatercalleduponKubrick
totakeovertheproductionofSpartacus(1960),bysomeaccountshopingthatKubrick
would be daunted by the scale of the project . Kubrick took charge of the project,
imposinghisideasandstandardsonthefilm.
DisenchantedwithHollywoodandafteranotherfailedmarriage,Kubrickmoved
permanently to England, from where he would make all of his subsequent films.
Kubrick'sfirstUKfilmwasLolita(1962),whichwascarefullyconstructedandguidedso
as to not offend the censorship boards which at the time had the power to severely
damagethecommercialsuccessofafilm. Dr.Strangeloveor:HowILearnedtoStop
WorryingandLovetheBomb(1964)wasabigriskforKubrick;beforethis,"nuclear"
wasnotconsideredasubjectforcomedy.Originallywrittenasadrama,Kubrickdecided
thattoomanyoftheideashehadwrittenwerejusttoofunnytobetakenseriously.The
film'scriticalandcommercialsuccessallowedKubrickthefinancialandartisticfreedom
toworkonanyprojecthedesired.Thenextfilmcompletedwasacollaborationwithsci
fiauthorArthurC.Clarke2001:ASpaceOdyssey(1968)ishailedbymanyasthebest
evermade;aninstantcultfavourite.
Kubrickfollowedthiswith ClockworkOrange,A (1971),whichrivalled Lolita
(1962)forthecontroversyitgeneratedthistimenotforonlyforitsportrayalofsex,but
also of violence. Barry Lyndon (1975) would prove a turning point in both his
professionalandprivatelives.Hisunrelentingdemandsofcommitmentandperfectionof
castandcrewhadbynowbecomelegendary.NextKubrickmadeanadaptationofa
Stephen King novel: Shining, The (1980). Kubrick's subsequent work has been well
spaced:itwassevenyearsbeforeFullMetalJacket(1987)wasreleased.Seenbyone
criticasthedarksidetothehumaniststoryofPlatoon(1986),FullMetalJacket(1987)
continuedKubrick'slegacyofsolidcriticalacclaim,andprofitattheboxoffice.The
1990s has seen Kubrick collaborate with Brian Adliss on Artificial Intelligence: AI

(2001),andbeginfilmingEyesWideShut(1999)withTomCruiseandNicoleKidman
underunprecedentedsecurityandprivacy.
