LAB 3
Introduction
This section assumes that you have used Microsoft Windows in the past and are familiar with many of the
more common file management procedures used in Windows. It is also assumed that you are currently
using Windows XP. Listed below are some of the more commonly used features available in XP that
pertain to accessing network files and folders as well as obtaining information about the network and
modifying certain network settings. These features include the following:

Command-line Utilities
Start-Run
The Run option is a convenient way to open a command window to run some of the more common
networking utilities, such as ping, tracert, ipconfig, and netstat. In Windows XP the Run option appears
in the lower right hand corner of the Start menu. If you do not see the Run option in this menu you can
add it as follows:
1. Right-click the Start button to display its shortcut menu (Figure 1).
2. Click the Properties choice to display the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box (Figure
2).

Networking
You can view computers on your network and make changes to your network settings by clicking the
Computer choice in the Start menu (Figure 5). After clicking the Computer choice a dialog box
showing a Network option appears (Figure 6). To display a list of computers that are connected to your
network, click the Network link in the dialog box (Figure 7). You may need to scroll the display to see
the Network link. It is located in the lower left-hand corner of the dialog box.

Searching for a Networked Computer
If you do not see an icon in the Network dialog box that represents the computer of interest, then you can
search for it as follows:
1. Type the first few letters of the computers name in the Search Network text box (Figure 7,
upper right-hand corner of the dialog box).
2. You will be prompted for the name of the computer you are trying to locate (Figure 7).
3. The display will change. Computers not satisfying the search criteria will disappear from view.
Administrative Privileges
It is recommended that you login as an end user so you do not accidentally make unwanted configuration
changes to your system and use the Run As option when performing tasks that require administrative
privileges.
2. Right-click the program icon. A popup dialog box appears (Figure 8). Click the Run as
administrator option. The User Account Control dialog box appears.
History
When working with the command-line interface in Windows you can use the up and down arrows on the
keyboard to recall previously entered commands. This can save you considerable typing if you use the
need to type the same commands repeatedly.

2. If necessary, click the Computer Name tab (beneath the title bar of the dialog box) to display the
Change button.
3. Click the Change button to display the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box (Figure
11). The Computer Name text box is used for entering a new computer name. The Member of
textboxes let you change the Domain or Workgroup to which your computer belongs. Joining a
new domain or workgroup requires administrative privileges. You will be prompted to enter an
administrator name and password if you attempt to make these changes.

3. Right-click the icon in Network Connections dialog box. A popup menu appears. Click the
Properties option. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears (Figure 14).
Click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option to highlight it. Click the Properties
button.
4. The Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) Properties dialog box appears (Figure 15). The
default setting is for the computer to obtain an IP address automatically from a DHCP server.

5. If you want to configure a static IP address for this computer click the option button labeled Use
the following IP address and enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway
information. You may also assign a static address for DNS.

1. Click the Computer choice in the Start menu (Figure 5). A listing of all available disk drives
and folders similar (Figure 16) appears.
2. To Map a network drive click the option on the tool bar at the top of the dialog box (Figure 16).
3. The Map Network Drive dialog box appears (Figure 17). Select the appropriate drive letter and
browse to find the folder or network resource to which you wish to assign a drive letter
designation.

3. Right-click on the name of the network adapter you want to modify (Figure 19).
4. A popup menu appears. Click the Properties choice.
5. A tabbed dialog box containing the configurable options for your network adapter appears
(Figure 20).
6. Note: On a properly configured Windows system, the network adapter options can only be
modified by a user with administrator privileges. If you have logged into your network using a
standard user account you will not be able to access the Device Manager. If you have access to
an administrative account you can use the Run as administrator option to access the devices
available from the Device Manager.
System Shutdown
It is best to either logout or shutdown your computer when you have completed a session on it. Doing so
provides security against network access by unauthorized individuals. To logout or shutdown proceed as
follows:
1. Click the Start button. The Start menu appears (Figure 5). The Shutdown option appears in the
lower part of the menu (Figure 21).
2. Clicking the right arrow icon displays a dialog box with additional options (Figure 21).

3. Clicking the Shutdown button shown in Figure 21 ends your session and turns the computer off.
4. Clicking the Switch user option ends your session and displays a logon dialog box. Selecting the
Log off option ends your session, but leaves Windows running on the computer. The Lock
option displays a logon dialog box. You must type a valid password to resume your Windows
session. Clicking the Restart option ends your session, restarts the computer, and starts a new
Windows session. Clicking the Sleep option puts your computer in a low power state.
