Definition

Downs Syndrome is a genetic condition that causes delays in physical


and intellectual development

Information about Family History

My cousin on my moms side of the family has downs syndrome

She is 7 years old now

Cause of Downs Syndrome

Downs syndrome is caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra


genetic material from chromosome 21

The person has 3 copies of chromosome 21 instead of people who dont


have downs syndrome have 2 copies

Populations/Age Groups Affected

One in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Downs syndrome,
or approximately 6,000 births per year

There are more than 400,000 people in the United States that have Downs
syndrome

Impact of Daily Life

Causes lifelong intellectual disability and development delays and causing


health problems

Usually have a harder time learning, are slower to learn and talk, and also
are slower taking care of themselves

Are more likely to get infections that affect there lungs and breathing\

Tend to grow and develop more slowly than other kids

Treatment

Physical therapy and speech therapy can give the kids a boast their
walking and talking skills when they are younger

There is no cure for Downs syndrome

Regular medical care to treat the chronic health problems that associated
with downs syndrome is important

Children with Downs syndrome should receive regular vision and hearing
testing, be evaluated for thyroid dysfunction, and receive regular
immunizations

Health Professionals Involved

Child psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and developmentalbehavioral pediatricians help with the behaviors

Physicians, nurses, and therapists are also needed
