Term 4
2014

Learning Brief

Goals

SM4 Probability and

Statistics

Unit goals covered so far

Describe, summarise and compare data
Perform statistical calculations and construct graphs
Interpret and comment on data sets
Calculate r and r2 for bivariate data
Use the normal distribution to investigate probabilities
Compute the 95% confidence interval for a random variable
Understand Binomial Theorem and its probability distribution
Recognise and use the formula for probabilities calculated from the
Poisson model

Many students actually looked forward

to Steves maths tests.

Theoretical Components

Identify types of data qualitative, quantitative.

Identify types of variables discrete, continuous
Measures of central tendency mean, median, mode
Measures of dispersion variance, standard deviation
Dependent and independent variables
Parallel boxplots, two-way frequency tables,
scatterplots
Correlation coefficient, r, and coefficient of
determination, r2
Note: all these will be covered by multiple choice
questions
Mean and variance of discrete random variables
Probabilities associated with the normal distribution
Compute the 95% confidence interval along with
probability limits for the sample mean
Confidence limits using standard error meaning of
likely, very probable, almost certainly
Binomial probability distributions
Expected values
Compute probabilities based on Poisson distributions
Recognise when to use the normal, binomial and
Poisson distributions.
Make sure you bring the A4 sheet Area under standard
normal curve to the test.

Practical Components
None this week. You can redo the quizzes as this is good
practice for the test.
Important: Make sure are confident in using your CAS.
In particular, make sure you can use it to solve problems
involving binomial distributions.
See Steve if you would like any help with this.

Investigation
Prepare your summary sheet to be handed in with the
test.
Make sure you have all this semesters investigations
done, marked off and in a folder. Hand it in before, or at
the latest, straight after the test.

QFO
