ADMIRABLE ATHLETE: KRISTEN TERRY

In the U.S., nearly half a million college students are also athletes. The amount of
discipline and dedication it takes to do well in the classroom and on the field or on the court is
something to take note of. At Appalachian State
University, many student-athletes are also stars in the
classroom- one of them being Kristen Terry. Through a
love for sports, Terry has also excelled in the classroom,
serving as a role model for all student-athletes.
A junior public relations major and a member of
the Appalachian State softball team, Terry works hard at
both aspects of her college life academics and athletics.
She has been on the Chancellors List for two consecutive years, which requires a GPA over
3.85, proving that it is possible to juggle academics and sports. College athletics are very time
consuming, but have helped me prioritize and manage my time effectively, says Terry.
Athletics have also helped me learn to work in a team and communicate with people from
different backgrounds, skills which will one day be used in my career.
Terry was nominated by her coach to be a part of the Student Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC), which provides insight into the student-athletes experience and bridges the
gap between faculty and students. She serves as the Director of Programming where she helps

come up with ideas, facilitate and program community service and fundraise for events. Terry
says that SAAC gives student athletes a chance to engage with the community and the university.
Terry says that the Department of Communication has given her the tools to utilize social
media effectively, handle crisis situations ethically, and deal with the public professionally. She
hopes to one day work as an event coordinator because she enjoys working with people and task
oriented projects. She thanks her professors for preparing her for the work force, and to future
student athletes she says, Branch out from athletics and enjoy being a student, as well!
