Lesson Title
Tens in Teen Numbers: A Game
Purpose
The students will solve addition and subtraction story problems. The
students will also visualize teen numbers as ten and extra ones. Lastly the students
will use the = and signs in comparing.
Materials
Student Activity Book pg. 289-29
Homework and Remembering PP.149-150
Hiding zero gameboard
Number tiles 1-10
Giant Number Cards
Introduction
Today we are going to solve story problems by drawing a picture and writing
an equation.
Procedure
1. Count to 100 by tens and tell how many with everyone
2. Say groups of 10 and decade numbers and reverse with everyone
3. Partner peek: tell the unknown partners as a group
4. Start activity 1
5. Everyone will draw their own story problem using pictures
6. Remind them to use words such as altogether, in all, total and put them
together for addition and words such as left, now and still fro subtraction
7. Have a few groups or students share there problems
8. Transition it hiding zero game
9. Have students pair up and arrange their three hiding zero gameboard
pages in order, vertically and horizontally
10. Work together to put a number tile of top of the 0 in each 10.
11. A student leader shows a giant number card and calls out that teen
number (example 18)
12. And one child in each pair picks up number tile (8) which is covering the
0 in the 10 and puts it in the blank rectangle.
13. Together everyone will then say (18) equals 10 plus (8). This is the ten
in (18) (pointing to the 1). This is the (8) in 18 (pointing to the 8).
14. This continues until all zeros have been uncovered
15. Trasition into worksheet
16. Ask: when did you last use subtraction equations?
17. Work through 1st exercise

18. Ask children how they might find the answer


19. Dicuss different ways such as fingers, drawing, or knowing partners
20. What do children remember about = or signs?
21. Draw on board explain each
22. Explain that they should write = or to complete the excercies at the
bottom of the page
23. Work independently

Ask how they know that 1 is equal to that many fingers is equal?
Is 4 equal to this many dots?
How do you know that 8 is equal to 4+4?
What is the = sign?
What is the sign?
