Chechens want independence and continue to agitate for it.

3. Did the Chechens gain independence from tsars Russia after the 1917 Russian
Revolution? Explain.

Yes, for a brief period of time until the Soviets took it away from them.

4. What did Stalin do to the Chechens during WWII? Why did he do this?

He deported the entire Chechen population to Siberia and Kazakhstan because he


thought they were collaborating with Nazi invaders.

5. Who, and how was their fate changed?

The Chechens fate changed because many of their people died.

6. What was the first Chechen War? [Who started it? When? Why? Results?]

Yeltsin opposed Chechen independence and Russia fought them over this conflict from
1944 to 1946. Many civilians were killed and Russia could not gain control of the
Chechens so they got independence.

7. When was the second Chechen War? [Who started it? When? Why? Results?]

In 1999, Chechens set off 5 bombs within 10 days and started the second were. Russia
ended up capturing the capital of the Chechens.

8. Prior to his death in 2006, the separatist Basayev was deemed to be responsible for the
most notorious event to that point in time. Identify this event. How many deceased
militants in this event were NOT Chechen? Why might this be a significant change in the
Chechen Wars?

He was killed in an explosion. The event led to the surrender of 500 militants. It is
significant because violence increased in northern Caucasus nations.

9. According to the American ambassador to Russia, what terrorist group is assisting the
Chechan rebels? How/why might Americans who were once sympathetic to the Chechen
cause for independence from the Russian Federation have changed?

It was Arabs that had links with Al-Qaeda. Because of Basayev, the guy behind all the
attacks, things were changed.

10. Do you believe the Russians should grant Chechnya their independence? Why or why
not? [Answer this question in paragraph format (minimum of six sentences).

I believe that the Chechens should have independence. The Russians work very hard to
keep control of the Chechens. Also the Chechens and the Russians get in many wars.
Many Russian people are losing their lives because the Russians wont grant them
Independence. If the Russians would just give them their independence, then wars and
fighting will stop. Many people will get to live and the tension would be gone.
