after-school
jobs,
Amundson said.
The policy, aimed at
middle schools and high

meet every need. With

the help of this foundation, many more students
are now able to realize
their dream of playing an
instrument in their
school band program.
Lucio band director
Emiliano
Camarillo
added that because of the
size of the Lucio program, students there
were in great need.

This grant will help

students foster a sense
of ownership and pride
in our music program
because we will have
the resources to put
instruments into the
deserving hands of our
Lucio
students,
Camarillo said. Our
goal is to give each student an outlet for musical expression and the

foundations generous
donation
will
help
ensure that no child will
ever be denied a place
in band.
The donations were
made possible through
generous funding to the
Mr. Hollands Opus
Foundation from the
Hatfield Family Fund.
The Mr. Hollands Opus
Foundation donates new

and refurbished musical

instruments to underserved schools in an
effort to give youngsters
the many benefits of
music education, help
them to be better students and inspire creativity and expression
through playing music.
The organization was
inspired by the 1995

founded by Michael
Kamen, who composed

and countless others. In
the last 16 years, some

schools, was published

online Monday in the journal Pediatrics.
Evidence on potential
dangers for teens who get
too little sleep is extremely compelling and includes
depression,
suicidal
thoughts, obesity, poor performance in school and on
standardized tests and car
accidents from drowsy

driving, said Dr. Judith

Owens, the policys lead
author and director of
sleep
medicine
at
Childrens
National
Medical
Center
in
Washington, D.C.
The policy cites studies showing that delaying
start times can lead to
more nighttime sleep
and improve students

motivation in class and

mood. Whether there are
broader, long-term benefits
requires
more
research, the policy says.
Many administrators
support the idea but
havent resolved the challenges, said Amundson.
She said the pediatricians
new policy likely will have
some influence.

Parents seeking a
change will come now
armed with this report,
Amundson said.
Amundson is a former Virginia legislator
and teacher who also
served on the school
board of Virginias
Fairfax County, near
Washington,
D.C.
Owens,
the
policy

author, has been working

with that board on a proposal to delay start times.
A vote is due in October
and shes optimistic about
its chances.
This is a mechanism
through which schools
can really have a dramatic, positive impact
for their students,
Owens said.

Fort Worths only allinclusive playground
built in 1992 with ramps
and sensory games for
kids with autism, Down
syndrome and other
special needs is at
Patricia LeBlanc Park in
the far southwest corner
of the city.
And though the park
is set for a $400,000
makeover from the
2014 bond package, and
several other parks
including
Northside
are being updated to
meet current accessibility requirements,
Torres and other special needs advocates
say the city isnt doing
enough to help Fort
Worths disabled people with wider access
to better facilities.
To make playgrounds

fun for all kids, Torres
wants the city to build
universal,
accessible
playgrounds, which have
wheelchair ramps going
up to all levels, a rubberized surface that makes
wheeling a chair easy,
and sensory games.
But the space and
money needed to build
universal playgrounds
makes that impossible at
all of Fort Worths 186
neighborhood
playgrounds, said David Creek,
assistant director of parks
and community services.
For Lizzette, that
means the kiddie swings
she will outgrow soon
are the only part of
Northside Park she can

easily take part in, and

she is often left behind
when her 3-year-old sister runs the short distance to the jungle gym.
Even that 15-foot distance is difficult for
Lizzette, because its
tough to get her wheelchair across the gravel in
the play area.
It is just so physical
for them and for us, as
parents, Torres told the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Your back hurts and she
wants to get up; she wants
to do it, but she cant. She
gets frustrated.
All of Fort Worths
parks met accessibility
requirements of the
Americans
with
Disabilities Act when they
were built, Creek aid, but
the older playgrounds do
not have to be upgraded
as new ADA guidelines
are established.
