Commentary: As you can see, majority of the immigrants came from Europe, but this was

primarily in the 1800's. You can see a decline in immigration from Europe in recent times.
Meanwhile, immigration from Mexico and Asia is steadily increasing.

Commentary: The irony of this cartoon becomes clear when you look at the symbolism

behind it. Yes, the cartoon is poking fun at Arizona's practices by showing

police officer

question if something as American as Lady Liberty has legal identification. Butthe real
paradox lies in the fact

t}at Lady Liberty, or Liberty itself

is a core foundation of America,

just like immigration. Truth is, most everyone in America is an immigranL The cartoon is
showing that Arizona's practices are targeting one of the key ingredients in the

development of America: immigration.
