Hundreds of Southern California high school musical theater students were honored
June 1 at two awards ceremonies, the Childress M.A.C.Y. Awards in Costa Mesa and the
Jerry Herman Awards in Hollywood. Both have the same mission: to celebrate and

honor local high school theater talents.


The 44th annual Childress M.A.C.Y. (Music and Arts Commend atio ns for Youth) Awards
ceremony was held at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Over 500 students from more
than 40 productions were recognized for their theatrical talents (See alist ofwinners of
the M.A.C.Y. Awards). The third annual Jerry Herman Awards were held at the
Hollywood Pantages.
The winners of the best actor and actress awards from both ceremonies will travel to
New York to compete in the the sixth annual National High School Musical Theater
Awards, also known as the Jimmys, which recognize high school musical talent
nationwide. There, they will join winners from 26 other regional competitions.
The M.A.C.Y.s will send DArcy Green of Tesoro High School in Las Flores and Shane
Satterfield of La Habra High School. The Jerry Hermans will send Ayla Stackhouse of
Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts in Los Angeles and Joshua
Velez of HArts Academy in Harbor City.

In addition to a free week in New York, the students will receive a week of private
coaching and master classes with Broadway professionals, and rehearse for a final
show to be performed June 30 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway.
The Jimmy awards are named after Broadway legend James M. Nederlander. In past
years, winners have received scholarships to New York University or the equivalent
scholarship money to the school of their choice.

The Jerry Herman Awards honor students in technical and performance categories.

nominee; Adam Fisher, best actor nominee; Katherine Steele, best actress nominee
ARCADIA HIGH SCHOOL, "Curtains" best lighting design nominee; best scenic
design nominee; Alana DeBlase, best actress nominee; Sean Monje, best supporting
actor nominee; Liam Swan, best actor nominee
