Tefnut is the lunar goddess of moisture, humidity, and water. Her


name roughly translates to “She of Moisture”. She is the daughter of the
creator god, and mother of the twin sky. She is shown as a woman with
a lion’s head.

Geb is the god of vegetation. He is usually shown with green


patches or plants on his body. He is often seen lying beneath the sky
goddess Nut. He is the son of Shu and Tefnut, twin brother of Nut, and
father of Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys.
Nut is the goddess of the heavens and sky. She represents
resurrection, and her name means “Night”. She is shown as her whole
body arched across the sky, leaning over her husband Geb, and her body
is blue with stars all over her body. She is the daughter of the air god
Shu, and water goddess Tefnut.

Isis is the goddess of fertility, motherhood, protection, and is the


female archetype for creation. Her name literally means “Female of
Throne”, which is interpreted as Queen of the Throne. Her headdress is
an empty throne which belonged to her murdered husband, Osiris. She
is the mother of Horus.
Osiris is the god of resurrection, the underworld, and the judge of
dead. He ruled the world of men in the beginning until murdered by his
brother Seth, but he was made to live again by Isis, his wife and sister.
He is the son of Geb and Nut and father of Horus and Anubis. He is
shown as a man wearing the tall white crown of Upper Egypt. He is
believed to have given the Egyptians the gift of barley.

Seth is the god of evil, drought, destruction, fire, storm, and chaos.
He is shown with the head of an unknown animal, and sometimes takes
the form of a crocodile. Every month he attacks and devours the moon,
the sanctuary of Osiris, and the gathering place of the souls of the
recently dead. He is the son of Geb and Nut, and husband of Nephthys.
Nebthet/Nephthys is the guardian goddess of Upper Egypt, who
looked after mothers and children. Her name means “Lady of the
Mansion”, and she is shown as a woman with a vulture’s head. She
became the great goddess of Upper Egypt during the rise of the
pharaohs. She is the wife of Seth and mother of Anubis.

Horace/Horus is the god of the sky. His name means “The One
Far Above”, and he is shown as a man with the head of a falcon. He is
the son of Osiris and Iris and his birth was thought to have been due to
Ogdoad. He was sometimes given the title Kemwer, meaning “The
Great Black One”, referring to the bird’s color. He was known as the
protector and ruler of Egypt. He was murdered by his brother Seth.
Anubis is the god of the dead and embalming. He is shown as a
man with the head of a jackal or dog. One of his duties was to guide the
dead in the Underworld on their way to Osiris. He was the son of Ra,
the son god, and Nephthys.

Tauret is the goddess of maternity and childbirth, and protector of


women and children. Her name means “The Great One”. She was
shown as a pregnant hippopotamus standing with a crocodile on her
back. She was a fierce fighter as well as a protector of children, and she
was honored in people’s homes, unlike in the temple like other gods.
