Prob and Stats

Measures of Variability (day 2)

Standards
S.ID.2 - Common Core State Standards
Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center (median, mean) and spread (interquartile
range, standard deviation) of two or more different data sets.
S.ID.4 - Common Core State Standards
Use the mean and standard deviation of a data set to fit it to a normal distribution and to estimate population percentages.
Recognize that there are data sets for which such a procedure is not appropriate. Use calculators, spreadsheets, and
tables to estimate areas under the normal curve.

Warm Up
Students will do one weighted mean problem and one mean of frequency problem. Students will also do 33 and 34 on page
126.

Objective
Scholars will have a complete understanding of how to find all averages that have been discussed and a beginning
understanding of variance.

Activity 1
Finish 3.1 if necessary in the packet. Start working on 3.2. Students will find the means at the beginning of 3.2 section in their
notes. After that we will come back as a class and go through how to find variance and standard deviation. WE will go
through an example.

Activity 2
Students will work in groups up to Chebyshev's theorem.

Activity 3
If we have time Chebyshev's theorem will be discussed.

Practice
pg. 143: pick 2-(9, 11, 15, 17), pick 2-(19, 21, 23, 25)
