Measures of Variability (day 2)

Standards
S.ID.2 - Common Core State Standards
Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center (median, mean) and spread (interquartile
range, standard deviation) of two or more different data sets.
S.ID.4 - Common Core State Standards
Use the mean and standard deviation of a data set to fit it to a normal distribution and to estimate population percentages.
Recognize that there are data sets for which such a procedure is not appropriate. Use calculators, spreadsheets, and
tables to estimate areas under the normal curve.

Warm Up
Students will do one population standard variance problem and one variance for grouped data problem

Objective
Scholars will understand how to find standard deviation and be introduced to coefficient of variation and Chebyshev's
theorem.

Activity 1
Go over and work through example of Sample variance problem. have students do # 14 on page 144. Work through the
notes on coefficient of variation and do one example with students. Then have students go through the next example in
groups.

Activity 2
Go over Chebyshev's theorem. Walk them through one example and have them do another example as a group or on their
own.

Activity 3
Go over the Empirical Rule. If time allows give a variety of problems from the section to assess their understanding.
