I chose this ad to rhetorically analyze because I am passionate about the cause to

stop smoking. I always enjoyed the clever ways advertisements said to stop
smoking, they seem to become more and more dark, forcing smokers to reconsider
next time they light up. (EXAMPLE-CONTRAST) When I came across this ad I was on
Facebook, a social media website. Which leads me to believe they were directing this
message toward teens or general Facebook users. This is reinforced by the fact that
the ad shows a childhood game, hangman, and also it has a chalkboard background,
alluding to the fact that the audience is still in school. This is a logical approach to an
antismoking aD, considering the older generation doesnt care as much about theIR
future as the younger generation does. STOP FROM PROGRESSING

The childhood game stands unfinished. Just by looking at the picture the audience
can tell it was going to say SMOKING but the point theyre trying to make is if you
do smoke you will never win in the game or in life.

Ethos: the message is from Kick It Before It Kicks You Antismoking campaign. This
shows me this organization cares, is credible, and well known.
Logos: to me, this ad appeals logically, but to a smoker this ad might not be so
logical. PAST EXPERIENCE IVE BROUGHT,
Pathos: They play on the childhood game covered in cigarettes, this would make
people stop and think back to when they were younger and seeing their game

defiled would tug at their emotions. CHALKBOARD APPEALS TO CHILDHOOD,

SOMETHING THEY CAN RECOGNIZE AND APPEAL TO.
Backpacks vs. Briefcases: Steps toward Rhetorical Analysis
by Laura Bolin Carroll states,
In an article called The Rhetorical Situation, Lloyd Bitzer argues that there are
three parts to understanding the context of a rhetorical moment: exigence, audience
and constraints. The exigence is what invited the discourse. For this ad, I believe
the exigence is the harm that cigarettes do to you and others. Also the exigence is
how common smoking is in America even though its detrimental to your health. The
audience, I already referred to, is in the 20s range. This is shown by the childish
game and the source, which I found it on. Constraints are things that either enable
the text to be understood or disable the text. A negative constraint would be the size
of the ad and the short amount of time someone can see it. A positive constraint
would be the clear writing making it easy to read even if you only scroll over it. The
purpose of the ad is to let people know if you do smoke, it might feel good for a few
minutes, but after that it will only disable you. The colors of the bright orange and
the dark chalkboard really enhance the words being seen. This could also be
considered a positive constraint.
