Essential Question:
What are simple Digraphs such as th, ch, sh,
Goal:
The students will recognize simple digraphs (th, ch, sh)
Objective:
Students will learn the digraphs th, ch, sh through participation in a group discussion and will demonstrate what they have
learn through sorting activities.
Materials:
Digraph poems, digraph addition chart/pieces, poster and marker, digraph charts and pictures for small group work, digraph
worksheet
Alignment with State Standards
L.K.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
L.K.2d Spell simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships.
Background Information:
Diagraph: a pair of characters used together to represent a single sound, such as "sh" in English
Engagement: Introduce what a digraph is. All letters make their own sound but some when you put them together make a whole new
sound all togehter
Exploration:
Digraph addition and poem:
Have children say the individual letter sounds then practice putting the letter together and making the sounds they
make together (s+h=sh)
Then after practicing each read the poem that goes with it
Graph diagraphs: Make list of words that make the three Digraph sounds ch, sh, th and record what students come up with on
poster board.
Application:
Students pair off and sort pictures into groups based on what digraph they have in them.
Closure:
Review the addition chart with the children

Diagraph picture match worksheet:
Children cut out pictures and put them in the correct category
Differentiation:
ADHD: Change activities frequently so that it keeps childrens focus
ELL: use pictures with sorts and addition activities to help better connect the words
Low learner: pairing kids with higher learners during practice to help them
High learner: Have children label the pictures after they sort them
