SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON PLAN

Objective: Learning about community helpers, such as police officers, fire fighters and
hospital workers, and taking community field trips will help students understand
how they fit into their community and the world. Children need an understanding
of their surroundings, and how they fit into their family, community, and the
world.
Standards: Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or
through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and
requesting clarification if something is not understood. (KCCRS SL.K.2)
Children will recognize and evaluate the rights and responsibility of people living
in their community. (2.1)
GRADE LEVEL- Kindergarten
BOOKS: The Berenstain Bears, The New Neighbors by Stan & Jan Berenstain
People Who Keep You Safe by Cathy French
Who Are We by Tanner Ottley Gay
Pre-Test: ask the Children what are some roles that we play in the community? What
kinds of people/jobs help the community?
Discussion/Activity: Read the books People Who Keep Us Safe and Picture Me Grown
Up. Use pictures, props, hats, dress up clothes, miniature dolls, etc., to depict these
helpers to the students and you read and describe the various community helpers. Have
the children all draw pictures of a time when they were are community helper or helped
someone. After they are finished they can each show their picture to the class and explain
to us what they have drawn.
Teaching Strategies: Whole class instruction
Learning Strategies: Large and Small group discussion, hands on learning
Post-Test: Teacher made worksheet were students match community helpers with their
jobs in the community (all pictures)
