Collaborative Leadership

Throughout my two years of nursing school I have been able to practice collaborative
leadership in my ways which included with my patients, nurses, peers and professors. I was able
to perform collaborative leadership roles in the provision, delegation, and supervision of nursing
care while retaining accountability for patient safety and the quality of that care. An
accomplishment that benefitted my leadership throughout nursing school was during my
simulation labs throughout the two years. I was placed in a situation, in front of my peers and
instructors to perform to tasks and responsibilities as the primary registered nurse. I was able to
delegate different tasks to my secondary nurses knowing the care we were giving to the patient
was safe and within our quality of practice as well as educating the patient and the family
members. Each semester I got to play the primary nurse role at least once and was able to take
criticism from my peers and professors to improve on how I can be a better leader. I was able to
learn how to act as a supervisor as well and take on those responsibilities. Knowing this and
practicing this within the simulation lab setting, I was able to take this knowledge and delegate it
throughout my practice in the clinical setting. By learning this way, I felt well prepared and more
of a leader. I hadnt done any clinical or nurse work before I got into the nursing program, so this
set me up for success as a leader. I did an assignment that was a self assessment of me during the
two years of the nursing program. Within this assignment I was able to focus on the different
leadership roles that I played throughout nursing school and the effects that it had on me. I was
able to be confident and delegate tasks and responsibilities to others throughout that experience.
Making sure that my patient is receiving safe and quality care every time they are under my care
came from the benefits of being a great leader. This is something that I will take with me in my
nursing career.
