The esophagus has 4 layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and adventitia. The mucosa contains a stratified squamous epithelium without keratin. Below it is the submucosa, a loose connective tissue layer with esophageal mucous glands. The muscularis layer has striated muscle in the upper third, with both striated and smooth muscle in the middle third, and smooth muscle only in the lower third. The outermost layer is the adventitia, made of loose connective tissue.
