A/AYoure doing well. If you received an A-, chances are that you have some issues with language use or
took one or two wrong turnsparagraphs could transition better, an example didnt quite workbut
overall, your essay exceeded the expectations of the assignment.
B+/B
Papers in this range usually exhibited one or two common issues that were holding the essay back from
more success: arguments could be more clear or persuasive, source use could be improved, ideas could
be developed further, etc.
You may be recommended for/required to take Wr4 + Wr50 (see below).
B-/C+
Papers in this range usually exhibit one of three issues:
1) Audience awareness is a problem, an issue that is often difficult for the writer to see because . . .
audience awareness is a problem. There is a breakdown occurring in the translation from the
students thoughts to the page. Students in this category need to work closely with as many
readers as are willing to give them feedback.
2) The level of academic discoursedepth of analysis, word choice and sentence sophistication,
argument development and strengthis not meeting Caltech standards and needs work.
Unsupported sweeping generalizations are common. Students in this category need to write
several drafts and add more precision, detail, and persuasive evidence and argumentation in
each version.
3) Language issues are interfering with clear expression of ideas. Students in this category will
improve through more frequent reading and writing in English.
You may be recommended for/required to take Wr4 + Wr50, or in fewer cases, Wr3 (see below).
C/CPapers in this range exhibit issues with most of the requirements of the assignment, including the
concerns described above. If your essay falls in this category, you will likely be required to take one of
the following next term:
In lieu of a Hum course Wr3: Reading and Composing Academic Writing (3-0-6)
In addition to a Hum course Wr4: Principles and Practices of Academic Writing (1-0-2) + Wr50:
Tutorial in Writing (1-0-0)

Most importantly, regardless of what grade you received, take the time to review and internalize the
corrections and suggestions made on your returned paper. This direct, personalized feedback is one of
the best ways to learn how to write more effectively.
