tel. and fax: 0963/43350 Entrance hours: all days from Monday to Sunday from 9-19 Ticket fee: 2. Free under 18. The Archeological Museum of Vibo Valentia was founded in 1969 by Vito Capialbi, a researcher and archeologist from Vibo, who, during his lifetime in the 19th century, collected a vast number of antiques in his home. The fortress was erected by Roger the Norman in 1070 and has undergone a complete renovation. The findings are exhibited in simple show-cases to allow maximum visibility and are exposed in chronological and topographical order. The historical walk starts on the second floor with the prehistorical and protostorical objects; on the ground floor you can find exhibitions of Greek findings originally from different collections in Vibo (Capialbi, Cordopatri, Albanese). The Roman town is represented by statues and various mosaiques. In the north tower there is an exhibition with findings from the roman necropolis, other late ancient towns and excavations from Vibo Marina, Briatico, Bivona and Cessaniti. The Archeological Museum of Vibo Valentia is well worth a visit, showing you the ancient history of this area, that has been inhabited by both Greeks and Romans.
