Palazzo Bianco Via Garibaldi, 11, 16124 Genoa, Italy

An important collection of Genoese, Italian and European paintings from the 16th to
the 18th century is on display in the Palazzo Bianco: alongside a series of masterpieces
by artists from Italy (Caravaggio, Veronese), the Flanders (Hans Memling, Gerard David,
Jean Provost, Rubens, Van Dyck), the Netherlands (Steen), France (Vouet, Lancret) and
Spain (Zurbaràn, Murillo), the Palazzo Bianco is home to a large collection of Genoese
paintings by Cambiaso, Strozzi, Piola, and Magnasco.
The Civic Textile Collections
Since 2005, the rooms of the first mezzanine floor of the Palazzo Bianco house a section
dedicated to the Civic Textile Collections, comprising about 1,800 pieces, including an
important collection of men’s and women’s clothing and fashion accessories dating from
the 18th-20th centuries, a series of lace pieces and many other precious textile products
of different kinds and origins.
The rooms dedicated to textiles are divided into two areas: an exhibition area,
showcasing rotating collections of artefacts, and a modernly equipped depository for
consultation.
The rooms house temporary exhibitions on important issues of the history of fabrics and
fashion fitted within the normal tour of the Museums of Strada Nuova.
It is also possible to view the pieces of the Textile Collection not on display for the
public, by contacting the curator of the collections and fixing an appointment in

The House of Columbus
The building is on two floors; the façade was restored during the 17th century. The ground
floor was used as a workshop by Columbus’s father, who dealt in wool weaving and trade.
Recent excavations carried out during the restoration of the house, have brought to light
the ancient foundations of a construction dating back to the early Middle Ages, probably
the 6th century.
The Porta Soprana gate In 1155, the Genoese feared an attack by Frederick Barbarossa.
Therefore, they hurried to create a circuit of walls enclosing the majority of the city. The
main entrance on the east side was formed by the Porta Soprana – also called Gate of St.
Andrew due to the convent nearby –, while the twin Porta dei Vacca was the gate
westwards. The two towers framing the access to the Porta Soprana still today bear two
gravestones in Latin commemorating the event.

Galata Museum of the Sea Located in the area between the Aquarium and the
Maritime Station, the Galata museum is housed in the oldest building of the old
marina, the Darsena, once the Arsenal of the Republic of Genoa. Since 1590, the
galleys of the Genoese fleet were built and armed here.
Today, in keeping with the past, the Galata is home to the Museum of the Sea, with
an architectural reconstruction of great value designed by Guillermo Vázquez
Consuegra.

Thanks to an exhibition on four floors, and an Open Air Museum with the highlight
attraction the S518 Nazario Sauro Submarine – the first floating museum in Italy
–, the Galata is currently the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean. The
history of the vital relationship between man and the sea is the exhibition’s recurring
theme, on an area of 130,000 square feet with innovative, interactive multimedia
stations, 4,300 original items, and constantly updated themes and exhibitions.

An integral part of the AcquarioVillage offering, the Nazario Sauro gives visitors a
chance to experience the living conditions of submariners aboard a real
submarine, the prototype of the first series in the Sauro class built in 1976,
decommissioned in 2002 and then turned into a museum in May 2010.

The Nazario Sauro submarine pre-show is spread over the third floor of the Museum –
at the end of the section dedicated to emigration – in 40 metres of reconstructed
“submarine”. This route is not intended to replace the submarine itself but to enhance
and prepare for the visit to it.
The section allows visitors to interact for a longer time with some of the instruments that
are not actually accessible on board, or can only be used in part, due to space being too
restricted or for safety reasons. In addition, it provides a chance for those who cannot
access the boat – the disabled, pregnant women, children under the age of 4 – to enjoy a
unique, immersive and engrossing experience.
This interaction combines information focused on the whole operation of the
submarine with fun and enjoyment, facilitating learning and providing a first-hand
experience. For example, visitors can experience the submersion and resurfacing of
the submarine, witness some aspects of life on board and enjoy using the periscope
and hydrophone.

The Galata ticket gives free admission to Commenda Museum-Theatre and Pegli Naval
Museum

The Commenda di Prè is a complex of two beautiful churches, located one on top of the
other: a medieval diamond of outstanding beauty. Built in 1180 by the will of Friar
Guglielmo of the Knights of St. John – which later became the Order of the Knights of
Malta –, the Commenda became a place of support and assistance for pilgrims and
crusaders travelling to or from the Holy Land.
Among its illustrious guests were two Popes: Pope Urban V, passing through Genoa on
his way to Rome in 1367, and Pope Urbano VI, who settled there for over a year between
1385 and 1836.
After forty years of restoration work, in 2009 the Mu. MA reopened the Commenda to the
public, organising a “museum-theatre” exhibition with the strong message that
“Nobody should feel a stranger in Genoa”. A multimedia instalment animates the
ancient walls, bringing back to life the characters of Genoese, Latin, Frankish,
Muslim, and Jewish medieval history.
Praised in international tourist guides, the building is a suggestive space for cultural
meetings, conferences, art exhibitions and gala dinners.

The Lanterna, the icon of the city, is the highest lighthouse of the Mediterranean and the
second-tallest in Europe. Through the centuries, it served as a watchtower, a stage for
tightrope walkers, and prison.
It was built in its present form in 1543, after the destruction of the old lighthouse in 1514.
The lighthouse is 253 ft tall, standing on a 130-ft cliff, its summit thus reaching 383-ft
above sea level. Its rotating optics project light up to 35 miles away.
There are 172 steps to reach the first terrace (the only open to visitors).

Genova e scritto “LANTERNA”.
The Museum of World Cultures is housed in the Castello D’Albertis,
home of captain Enrico Alberto D’Albertis, its creator.
After travelling by sea and land between the 19th-20th centuries, the Captain’s home
collects pieces of his world in a romantic setting between “Chambers of Wonder” and
colonial trophies.
His castle testifies to the strong fascination that the distant worlds he had visited exerted
on his soul, permeated with Genoese traditions and the love for the sea, as well as
curiosity about the unknown and the unventured. But there is more. At the entry of the
16th-century bastion, on which the castle was built, starts a second exhibition, where
archaeological and ethnographic pieces are displayed through the dialogue with the
peoples who produced them, thus giving voice to multiple perspectives and making our
certainties relative.
The Castello D’Albertis is not only the home of Captain D’Albertis but our own house, the
cradle of our drives and fascinations, our fears and searches, the questions that mark our
relationship with the world.
