On November 12, 2014, the Samford School of Education partnered with the 2nd graders at Trace Crossings Elementary School to celebrate 100 years of schooling. The 2nd graders got to experience classrooms from 1915, 1955 and the future. The students also got to participate in physical education games and some dances from this time period. We also got the opportunity to hear from Dr. Carter who has had a long history with Samford. I really enjoyed listening to her talk about what life was like during World War 1. I was amazed how much she remembered from that time period. I also enjoyed looking through the books that she gave to Samford. While the students were here we helped them meet some of their required Social Studies standards. Some of the words that we focused on included, history, century, decade, past, present, future, timeline, history, and centennial. These were all words that would help the students to meet the standards. Throughout the day, the students were hearing these words used in each of their simulations. I was surprised at how much the students really took away from the day. When we were taking the picture, the students were able to raise their hand and tell us some of the words they remembered hearing throughout the day. I learned that the students really had fun, and were super into what was happening at each of their simulations. As a member of the leadership team, I helped make sure that everything ran smoothly for the day. I helped the other students by laminating their name tags, and just assisting with whatever needs they had. Overall, I felt very lucky to have been a part of this celebration. Its not every day that one gets to celebrate the 100th year of the School Education, so this was a fun way to start off a year of celebrating. I believe the Trace students as well as the Samford Students enjoyed being a part of such a wonderful celebration.
