• Redemption Song
• Bob Marley was the artist. He was undoubtedly the most influential reggae
singer in history. Of Jamaican descent, Marley spread messages of love and
peace. He has become an icon of these values and is still popularly listened
to till this day. He even performed in a concert in Milan with a hundred
thousand people watching.
• John Locke would most closely associate with the theme of this song because he is all
about equality and freedom. Also he believes that if the government is corrupt, the
people have the right to do something about. He also believes that the people should
fight together and be able to vote.
• This song clearly relates the ideas of the Enlightenment. It even states “emancipate
yourself from slavery”. Ending slavery was a staple idea of the Enlightenment. Also, the
song says, “None but ourselves can free our mind.” This shows that there is a sense of
community working together which is what democracy is based off. In addition, the song
claims, “How long shall they kill our prophets, While we stand aside and look.” Thos
relates to how another Enlightenment idea is the ability to overthrow and impeach a
corrupt government.
