Monday: December 1

Objective:
o Students will use decoding strategies to clarify pronunciation.
o Students will learn to spell words with soft c and g in them correctly.
o Students will be able to identify an authors purpose for writing.
o Students will be able to use sentence and word context to find meaning of unknown
words.
Materials:
o Reading text book (23)
o Spelling pre-test sheet (23)
o Teacher's Manual
o Vocabulary cards
o White board in front of classroom
Procedure:
o As students come in from recess they will be instructed to head to the front carpet
without anything. There we will talk about consonants /s/c; /j/ g, dge.
o After discussing the consonant digraphs that are in the spelling words, the students will
be instructed to grab a spelling pre-test sheet and a divider, and head to their spots.
Once everyone is in the classroom at their spot, I will give the spelling pre-test. Once
completed, they will turn those in for me to correct.
o Everyone will then come to the front carpet. We will discuss authors purpose and do
the read aloud The Money Tree on page T216.
o I will then preview the story they are reading this week, A Tree is Growing before
sending them back to their spots to read silently. Once everyone has finished, we will
come up to the carpet and discuss words that were difficult.
o After that, we will discuss our vocabulary words for the week.

Tuesday: December 2

Objective:
o Students will use decoding strategies to clarify pronunciation and spelling or words.
o Students will build robust vocabulary.
Materials:
o Leveled Reader (Small books)
o Large white board up front
o White boards (23)
o Dry erase markers (23)
o Erasers or wet wipes (23)
o Vocabulary worksheet (23)

Procedure
o Students will grab a white board, marker, and eraser and come to the front of the
classroom. We will play a short word building game using our spelling words for the
week and discussing the phonics skill that we are learning.
o The students will then put their white boards and supplies away and come back to the
front carpet. I will now read the vocabulary read aloud on page 368 in the students
book. We will focus on our vocabulary words that are highlighted in the story and also
discuss the other vocabulary words.
o Students will then have time to read the small leveled reader books for about 30
minutes. Once they read those, they will work through a vocabulary worksheet that has
all of our vocabulary words for the week.

Wednesday: December 3

Objective(s):
o Students will be able to recognize authors purpose.
o Students will be able to use details from text to support their answers.
o Students will be able to make connections between related texts.
Materials:
o Reading books (23)
o Comprehension worksheets (23)
Procedure:
o Students will grab a reading book when they come in and come to the front carpet. We
will read the story A Tree is Growing aloud as a group. Throughout the story I will ask
the students some comprehension questions to make sure that they are comprehending
the story.
o Once we finish the story, we will discuss what the authors purpose was for writing the
story and how we know this.
o We will then read the paired selection to our story, Ancient Trees Survive.
o Upon completing the paired selection, we will discuss the authors purpose for writing
the story.
o The students will then be given a comprehension worksheet for the story A Tree is
Growing.
