Topic sentence
The mood in the short story Hills Like White Elephant changes drastically
overtime which builds tension.

Supporting sentence
Hemmingway conveys mood through different part in the short story. The mood is
altered most when the girl uttered everything tastes of liquorice. Especially at the
things youve waited so long for, like absinthe and the American retorted oh, cut
it out which is when the mood abruptly shifted which causes tension between the
two characters. The tension rises immensely due to the diverse ways Hemmingway
uses to transfer between different moods. Another illustration of when the mood
transforms is when the girl adds Theyre lovely hills she said They dont really
look like white elephants. I just meant the coloring of their skin through the trees
she announced as she attempted to reduce the tension, which became a success
since their discussion adjusts to the American adds The beers nice and cool he
said, Its lovely the girl responds. Its really an awfully simple operation, Jig the
man said, he then continues with Its not really an operation at all which then
causes the tension to merger once again. Hemmingway does this to build tension
into the story, which makes it more interesting for the readers. He also does it so the
readers understand that there are more problems to the story than just the
operation, which creates suspense.
