English Intermediate Writing II (INGL 3104)

Short Film Analysis Worksheet: This analysis is divided in three parts: 1. Pre-viewing 2.
Viewing and 3. Post Viewing.
Instructions: Watch the two short films assigned by the instructor at least twice. The first time, you
will watch the film (probably for the first time) and the second time you are going to decide which
short film you are going to choose and analyze. After choosing the short film, answer the following
questions in COMPLETE sentences. If not answered in complete sentences, points will be
deduced. This assignment should be typed and handed in on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. Type
ONLY the outline with the answers of the questions, do not type the questions. Heading of the
assignment should be in MLA format. The assignment will substitute the class of Monday,
March 24, 2014.
Part I Pre-viewing (4 points)
A. Title and year of the film. (1 point)
B. Director/Producer of the film. (1 point)
C. List some characters you might expect to see based on the title of the film or your previous
knowledge of it. (2 point)
Part II Viewing (5 points)
A. Note any camera angle, lighting, music, narration or editing that contribute to the creating of the
atmosphere of the short film. How does this contribute the short film? (5 points)
Part III. Post Viewing (11 points)
A. What is the central message (s) of this short film? (3 points)
B. Consider the effectiveness of this film in communicating its message. As a tool of
communication, what are its strengths and/or weaknesses? (2 points)
C. How do you think the filmmaker wanted the audience to respond? (2 points)
D. Does this film appeals to the viewer's emotion? How does it make you feel? (2 points)
E. Write a question to the filmmaker that is left unanswered by the film or a question that you
might have regarding the film in general.(2 points)
Total of points for questions: 20 possible points
Handing in assignment on March 26: 10 points. If handed after the due date, 5 points will be
deduced for each day late.
