MANAGEMENT
All servers are to be connected only to the
specified network.
And that network should be registered with
the Technical Services.
Who ensure the information resources risk
assessment according to the institutional
standards and best practices.

Service not required by the server should be
DISABLED whenever the server is connected
to the network.
E.g. university network:
telnet
Anonymous FTP
DNS
DHCP
SMTP

SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR ROLE


Disable all default accounts except required
services
Change the default passwords for all the
services
Establish minimum number of user accounts
Use local administrator account to perform
server management functions
Register with Technology Services and
establish server protections through
protection mechanism.

Server should run appropriate operating
system supported by Technology Services.
Server should employ intrusion protection
software
Regular updates of vulnerability patches,
normally hours.
Back up at regular based on risk assessment
Server must authenticate all the users

Physical access to the server must be
restricted, only to the authorized data
administrator.
Access to the server outside the network
should be restricted unless it is absolutely
necessary.
