WEST VALLEY–MISSION COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT

TITLE: UNIX SERVER ADMINISTRATOR

DEFINITION: Under the general direction of the Systems and Network Operations Manager
of Information Systems, or assigned supervisor, the Unix Server Administrator will be
responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, upgrade, troubleshooting, and security
for all administrative servers in the District administrative local area network (LAN). This will
include, but is not limited to, enterprise class Unix application servers, Internet gateways, anti-
virus systems, world-wide web (WWW) and email servers. Additionally the UNIX Server
Administrator works collaboratively with LAN Server Administrator in diagnosing network
problems related to the interaction of the assigned servers and clients on the network; and
providing consulting (ranging from simple to high level technical support) to other members of
staff. The UNIX Server Administrator will provide technical expertise and consulting services
related to the design development, enhancement and testing of computer applications and
related equipment. Will operate as a backup for LAN Server Administrator. Night, weekend
and off-campus work maybe required.

• Perform system administration tasks to ensure reliability and stability in servers


maintained by Information Systems. Install, configure, upgrade, and patch operating
systems, network operating systems, system utilities, applications and third-party
software on UNIX based servers; develop and schedule routine maintenance plan for
administrative computing services to include, but not limited to, backups, e-mail, web
services, intranet, data warehouse, the administrative business system, and security.

• Upgrade and maintain servers, hardware, software, and security. Investigate system
errors, performs backups and ensures user accessibility and site performance. Consult
with users and project teams to determine requirements for web pages and related
applications. Design and develop web-based applications and management systems for
District Internet and Intranet use.

• Install, configure, and maintain e-mail servers, anti-virus system, list servers, web
servers, proxy servers, Internet gateways, both primary and secondary DNS servers, and
any other servers that may be required.

• Create and maintain file shares and users accounts. Create and maintain up to date
security policy for file shares and users accounts. Delegate administrative authority to
appropriate personnel for routine server related maintenance tasks to meet intra
departmental needs.

• Maintain and update Internet services entries including mail aliases, ftp, telnet, DNS,
LDAP and other related services.
• Create and maintain any specialized scripts required for licensing, backup and
automation of server processes.

• Troubleshoot software operating and network operating environment failures and


problems.

• Install, configure, monitor, and maintain backups for all administrative servers.

• Understand District infrastructure and works with District project teams to ensure
compliance with technical standards. Interfaces extensively with Applications Support
staff.

• Work with the database administrator to manage the design and development of
databases and related master files. Coordinate contributions by Systems, Operations and
Application Support to develop and improve databases and master files. Guarantee the
performance integrity and quality of databases. Control system capacity for existing
requirements and plans for future needs. Coordinate with other IS departments to
ensure implementation and monitoring of databases. Analyze and project long-range
space requirements.

• Responsible for system performance optimization, maintenance and production


support. Work with other IS team members in solving enterprise interoperability and
integration issues that may arise. Analyze system use and provides reports on average,
peak and guideline values for each performance element to track resource use. Confer
regularly with Microcomputer Support, Operations, and Applications Support staff to
ensure that appropriate system performance is achieved. Significant contact with
vendors.

• Provide technical leadership and expertise to District and campus administrators, staff
and others to ensure efficient management of resources and return on investment.

• Maintain project budgets and records of expenditures in accordance with established


District policies; provide input and prepare justifications to support staffing, equipment
and supply requests.

• Document procedures for the maintenance, upgrade, installation and configuration of


system and application software on the various servers. Ensure that necessary materials
are available as a resource for problem determination as well as training of personnel.

• Plan, develop, and implement security measures to safeguard infrastructure interfaces


against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure. Determine
methods of implementing and enforcing infrastructure security policies.

• Document and maintain procedures for all District UNIX servers for disaster recovery.

• Select, evaluate and recommend to management, hardware and software upgrades,


modifications and enhancements to meet user needs including security systems,
intrusion detection systems, network management stations, access servers, and routers;
recommend cost effective service contracts and maintenance agreements.
• Prepare and maintain records for all server resources.

• Maintain and expand current knowledge of technological advances in client-server,


operating systems, networking environments, and other evolving technologies.

• Work with designated IS personnel to ensure coordination, collaboration, cross-training


with all IS and college Information Technologies staff.

• Make recommendations with respect to upgrade and selections of new operating


software; network operating software, and servers.

• Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in


Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field with course work in
LAN Administration, Server Administration, Scripting, or Operating System software, and
three years of increasingly responsible experience in the administration of systems, with
specialized training in server administration across networks to include personal computers
and workstations and a multi-vendor client server information system data center
environment with networked servers. Four years of experience during which the applicant
has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for
the required education on a year-for-year basis.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. Passing a full security


background check.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are primarily performed in server rooms and equipment
wiring centers. Position may require travel from one location to another to conduct work.
Incumbents may be subject to noise from computer equipment operation and transformers, and
working with high voltage electricity.
