Literary Lingering- Nature by Numbers
Nature is mathematical, say the scientists.
A golden ratio, a swooping parabola.
Every flower a different algorithm.
They say that symmetry is the end all,
that the things we find lovely
we do because they are symmetrical.
They say that attraction is chemistry, not connection;
that couples result from
the perfect blending of chemicals
They say that beauty is mathematical,
that a formula can find the exact
attractiveness of a person.
They say that you are your genetics,
that DNA double helix.
But I never was good at math,
and I believe that
true beauty is a mystery.
