When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, these alliances pulled countries into war as Germany attempted to defeat France and Russia. What began as enthusiasm for many soldiers turned to realization of the war's deadly nature as trench warfare led to massive casualties, new weapons increased lethality, and the conflict became the largest the world had seen, later known as World War 1.
