Curriculum Outline

Year 1 Term 2
We are really looking forward to our new topic
next term
Carnival of the Animals!
Dear Parents,

Next term we will

be studying animals very closely. We will be

looking at how they move and communicate, as well as classifying


them into different groups. I am really looking forward to our trip
to the Aquarium where we will be looking at lots of different sea
creatures.
After

carnival,

we

will

be

focusing

on

the

sea,

looking

at

the

history of sea travel andPIRATES!


This term we have been collecting marbles and we won a trophy
when

we

reached

100

and

we

had

movie

morning

when

we

reached 150 marbles! Well done Year 1!


Next term, we will start collecting marbles and house points again
from 0. Hopefully we will have lots of certificates again next term
too!
It has been very good to see so many children looking smart for
school

and

wearing

their

correct

uniforms.

L iter ac y
In Literacy, we will be writing poems and riddles about different sea creatures.
We

will

be

carrying

on

with

our

phonics

programme,

and

beginning

to

write

describing words and sentences about our favourite animals. After our visit to the
aquarium, we will be writing information texts and recounts about our experiences.
Then we will venture above water to write some pirate adventure stories! We will be
focusing on capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Our homework next term
will involve a spelling test! Please allow the children time to practise them at
home.

In Numeracy we will be learning some multiplication facts, as well as addition
and subtraction using a number line and 100 square. We will also be looking at
3D shapes to be able to name them and describe their properties. When making
pirate maps we will be using co-ordinates and positional language.
Topic ( Geogr aph y, Histor y, S cien ce, I CT)
We will be learning about different animals: what they eat, where they live and
that humans are animals too! After this, we will be focusing on sea animals, and
learning about the sea with a trip to the aquarium. Finally, we will venture above
the water to learn about pirates and the history of sea adventures! It is going to
be an exciting term as we use the iPads and computers to illustrate and type
stories.

During term two, Year 1 children will explore three different topics within Portuguese
lessons: Summer

on

the

beach,

Farm

and

Ziraldos

stories

(Brazilian

famous

author). For PFL (Portuguese as a Foreign Language) children, we will be focusing

on basic vocabulary and language skills to enhance communication in Portuguese.

A th let ics

Concentrates

on

developing

good

basic

running,

jumping

and

throwing techniques. They are set challenges for distance and time that involve

using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing. As in


all athletic activities, children think about how to achieve the greatest possible
speed, height, distance or accuracy.
S w im ming - Children will have the opportunity to build confidence in a swimming
pool, become aware of safety measures and how important they are; learn some
survival skills in the water and improve travelling techniques with and without the
use of water wings, learn personal survival techniques, play simple games and gain
some basic knowledge of freestyle stroke skills.

Printing - Children in Year 1 will be exploring animal prints and patterns in the
first half of the term.

They will learn various techniques such as repeating,

overlapping, rotating and arranging shapes.

make simple monoprints to build repeating patterns whilst exploring colour, pattern
and line.

Collage & Mixed Media In the second half of the term the children will learn
about the author and illustrator Eric Carle.

They will find out about the

interesting technique he uses to decorate and illustrate his books then produce
their own work in a similar style.

In doing this they will investigate a variety of

collage techniques, arrange and glue a variety of materials onto different


backgrounds and create images from a variety of media.
Mu sic
The children will be learning about pulse and rhythm. They will be practicing
that on a variety of percussion instruments and through different kinds of songs.
They will also be exploring pitch. They will be learning how to control their own
pitch and explore pitches in different songs and instruments.
