The Literacy of Business
Communication in business is often built upon occupation, profession, or
trade. In many cases, communication relies on the authority of relationships from an
economic view. The University of Utahs business department strives for quality in
their applicants. The experiences you gain while in your undergraduate years at the
university are some of the most important. In order to excel in the business school it
is important to be involved with the communities and social groups that are offered
in this program. Knowing from the beginning what specific discourse you will be in,
will help you to proceed in a timely matter. The certain criteria needed to progress
in this discourse is held at a high standard. It is important to plan ahead and know
what type of requirement you will be held at. The practice of becoming accepted
into the school of business is one that is not taken lightly. There are various benefits
of being accepted into the business school. This profession helps you progress not
just in the business world as well as other fields.
Quality Over Quantity
In the business department, applicants are held at a high standard of having
to maintain 3.2 GPA. This standard is met in almost all applicants. Because the
individual who applies knows the kind of quality that is expected of them, almost all
applicants are qualified and prepared for the business world. When a prospective

business student finds that they have not reached the level that is needed to excel in
the business world, they often dont even take the opportunity to apply because they
know that their previous performance is not enough to be accepted. Only quality
applications of a 3.2 GPA or higher are reviewed in the business school for this
reason. This field of study at the university of Utah does not wish to excel with
quantity but with quality. The business school only wishes to expand with wellrounded competitors.
Experience
The experience and opportunities you can gain in the business school will
prepare you in the real world of business. Students in the business school have
access to a broad range of support and learning experiences. Undergraduates who
find it beneficial to be active and involved in the program have the opportunity to
participate in clubs and social groups to gain more experience in the business field.
Others might find it more helpful for their application to take a break from their
classes at the University and do internships or study abroad and get hands on
experience in the world of business. Being one of the top schools of business gives
you the opportunity to discover and find out what you want to do with your degree.
These opportunities are made possible due to the vast amount of recourses the
school of business has to offer.
Communities
Being in the business school at the University of Utah has numerous benefits that
can help you in more ways then you might have thought possible. There is a wide range
of programs and recourses that can help you benefit now, and in your future in business.

In this accelerated program there are advisors that can and will help you through every
step along the way. I was given an opportunity to meet with one of the advisors at the
business school and she said we prefer students to come in as often as they can so that
we know exactly what their plans are and that they are on the right track for
graduation.(Jessica Taverna) If you ever have questions or need help with planning
your degree, the advisors are more than willing to help. The professors in this major are
all highly skilled and accredited, and they deliver the information you need to succeed in
this major.
Social Groups
Another option for student success is peer groups and peer advisors. For some
students, it is easier to talk to someone who is the same age and it is not as intimidating
for them. The peer groups are a great resource to help every student succeed with grades.
They can help you study and get work done. Working with a group of people who are
doing the same thing helps to keep you on track and give you the motivation you need to
succeed. There are also a number of internships that the business school can point you
towards. These internships can help you land a job once you get out of college. The
University of Utah Business School helps you network and build relationships before you
have even graduated. The exchange programs that the school offers can show you what it
is like to study in another country. The recourses and oppurtunities at the University of
Utah Business School are countless.
In the school of business you see many diverse groups and communities.
There is a shift in sophistication between the upper and lower classman. This is
because the upper classmen have already attended and completed a wide range of

classes that has given them experience to understand the business world. While the
underclassmen are still learning what the upperclassmen already know.
Different Discourses within the business field
Once you have been accepted into the business school, you begin to take
classes that are specific to your degree. The eight degrees in the business field
include, accounting, business administration, entrepreneurship, finance, information
systems (IS), management, marketing, and operation management. Once you have been
accepted into the business school you choose one of these eight specialties. Being
accepted into the business school gives you the opportunity to develop into a specific
community. In your pre-business degree you have the option to learn about all eight of
these degrees, giving you a clearer idea of what degree you will choose.
Guidelines
In order to obtain a degree from the University of Utah School of Business, you
must first be accepted into the business school. If you want to do this you must meet a
few requirements. First, you must maintain a 3.2 or higher GPA. Maintaining a 3.2 GPA
is not going to always be easy so if you want to do this you will need to study and work
hard. Without putting in effort, you will not have the results needed to get the 3.2 GPA.
There are also specific pre-requisite classes that you have to pass before you can be
admitted into the business school. The list of these classes includes MATH 1090, IS
2010, ECON 2010, BUS 1050, OIS 2340, and ACCTG 2600. You have to pass these
classes in order to move on to the next class each semester. You will not be accepted into
the business school if you dont meet these requirements. Applying without meeting the
grade requirements would be a waste of time. However, in the unfortunate situation that

you do not pass a class the University allows you to be able to retake it the next semester.
If you do all of these things and meet all of these requirements then you will have no
