Our main focus this month will be on using and
understanding question words how they relate to the
characters and setting of a story, as well as describing
the relationship between text and illustrations. The
children will also be reading poetry and discussing its
similarities and differences with other common types
of text. For phonics and phonemic awareness, the
children will be segmenting beginning, middle, and
ending sounds in cvc words, as well as substituting a
sound in a cvc word in order to read and write a new
word. Finally, for writing the children will be focusing
on opinion pieces, remembering to use correct
capitalization, finger spaces, and punctuation, as well
as sounding out words independently. The children
should be able to represent the beginning and ending
sounds on their own.

Classroom News
We are continuing our work with the Daily 5 for ELA time.
Part of the Daily 5 is to build up stamina so that the
children are being mindful and staying focused while
working quietly. I have been choosing a Stamina Queen
and a Stamina King each day. These Queens and Kings
are students who do exemplary work, take their time, and
know how to extend their work if they finish before the
timer goes off. Ways to help us build your childs
stamina at home, would be to share a book with your
child and read it together, show them how to find
popcorn words in stories that you are reading, show
them how to read a story by looking at the pictures, and
give them time to practice writing and sounding out words
independently. Try to extend their stamina by asking them
what they can do when theyre finished add details to
the pictures, write another sentence, get another book,
etc.
