The Daily 5
For December and the rest of the year, we will be
starting something in ELA called the Daily 5. It is geared
toward small group discovery activities that will
strengthen the students understanding of the letters,
phonics, and sight words that we cover during whole
group time. There are five different centers that the
children will be working at:
1. Read to Someone- the children will read to
each other using the words or the pictures in the
book
2. Listen to Reading- the children will listen to a
story on tape and then complete a book review
3. Meet with the Teacher- a small group of
children, divided by ability, will meet with the
teacher to work on skills they need assistance
with
4. Work on Words- there will be activities for the
children to complete relating to our most
common words
5. Writing- the children will complete a writing
prompt using their sight words and phonics skills
It is important that the children work independently
during the Daily 5 because the teacher is meeting with
a group, so we have been working really hard with the
students on remaining focused and working
independently. You can help by reminding your child to
be mindful while working and by practicing having them

Language Arts
We will be continuing our work with the letters
and letter sounds, as well as segmenting words.
We will also be focused on dictation and writing

beginning sentences with a capital letter, finger
spacing between words, and ending the
sentence with proper punctuation.
Math
In math we are continuing with measurement as
well as identifying and representing numbers.
We will also be working with building numbers
and then changing it to another number by
counting on or counting backwards.
Science
In science, we have finished up our unit on
trees, but will continue to check out the conifer
