Homework Four

Story Problem #1:

Content Standard: Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
Practice Standard: MP. 1-6
Routine: Kevin blew up 40 balloons for his birthday party. He used them to make 5 balloon
bouquets. If each bouquet had the same number of balloons in it, how many balloons were in
each bouquet?
Non-Routine: Kevin blew up balloons for his birthday party. The number of balloons he blew
up are both a multiple of 4 and 5. How many balloons could Kevin have possibly blown up for
his birthday party?
Justification: I changed this story problem from routine to non-routine by using the guess and
check framework. What makes the second problem non-routine is the fact there may be more
than one correct answer to it. Not to mention, there are several possible approaches towards
working this problem.
Solve:
a. 4 x 5 = 20
b. 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48
5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60
Explain: To solve this problem, I first started by taking the two numbers in the equations and
multiplied them together. By doing this, I got the possible answer of 20. Then, I approached this
problem by taking note of the multiples of both 4 and 5 to get the possible answers that way.

Story Problem #2:

Content Standard: Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
Practice Standard: MP. 1-6
Routine: Hector and his family went to a water-skiing show. For the finale, 6 boats towed 4
water skiers each. How many water skiers were in the finale?
Non-Routine: Hector and his family went to a water-skiing show. Half of the water skiers
opened up the water-skiing show. Three of them performed after. Now, nine water-skiers are
performing. How many water skiers performed at the water-skiing show?
Justification: I changed this story problem from routine to non-routine by using the working
backwards framework. What makes the second problem non-routine is the fact there are several
possible approaches towards working this problem.
Solve:
a. 3 + 9 = 12, 3 + 9 = 12, 12 + 12 =24
b. 3 + 9 = 12, 2 x 12 = 24
Explain: To solve this problem, I first started by adding three plus nine. Because I know half of
the water skiers opened up the show, I know if I add three plus nine again, I will get twelve
again. So, if I add twelve plus twelve, I know I will get the answer of 24. For the second strategy,
I started by adding three plus nine again. Once again, because I know half of the water skiers
opened up the show, I multiplied twelve by two and got the answer of 24.
