It is vital for teachers to incorporate cultural relevance and social justice within their
practice so their students may feel valued and as part of their classroom community. In an
elementary mathematics classroom, multicultural education may take various simple forms, such
as illustrating how different cultures learn math and using manipulatives to appeal to students
with different learning styles. Through researching how different cultures use math and sharing
this knowledge with students, teachers help students from various ethnic backgrounds feel
included. When doing this, it is important for teachers to point out that regardless of whichever
cultural method their students prefer using, each method concludes to the same final answer.
Through using manipulatives to appeal to students with different learning styles, teachers make
math fun for students. However, beyond the use of manipulatives, teachers need to accommodate
to all those diverse learners within their classroom through providing them with the proper
supports they need in order to learn and succeed.
