Natures Plan vs.

Mans Arrogance
By Lucero L. Rojas Gallegos
What do all of the following have in common: The Dark Ages, the Renaissances
Period, the Industrial Revolution, and The Roaring 20s? The answer is pretty simple,
right? Well in case it isnt, the answer is that they are time periods whose name
pretty much reflects how those periods are remembered. So how will the present
time period in which we are currently living be
remembered by the future generations? Will it
be called the Modern Age, the Somnolent Age,
or maybe the High-Speed Age? All these
names describe todays society pretty
accurately.
Thanks to all the technological advances and
breakthroughs, many things that were
impossible to accomplish a century or even a
couple of decades ago are now possible.
Traveling around the world in a couple of
hours, controlling certain diseases and
conditions like Diabetes, HIV, Hepatitis, and communicating with someone on the
other side of the world in matter of seconds are but a few of the commodities we now
enjoy thanks to the increase of technology and knowledge. Nevertheless, on the
other side of the coin a dark shadow also came along side these benefits, the shadow
of human arrogance, very similar to how the dark side of technology is portrayed in
the Disney Pixar movie Wall-E.
In the beginning, God created... just playing I wont start quoting the bible, but,
seriously since the beginning not of humans but of the world Nature has always been
in control of everything. Until, well, lets just say its still in control even though our
human arrogance tells us it is us, and that we can
change and control things that had previously
been under Natures entire control if we set our
determination on it. Dont get me wrong;
sometimes going against nature is a good thing, in
my opinion. For example, in nature only the
strongest survive and the weak are forgotten and
left to die, but as humans we reject that and help
out each other no matter if someone is weak or
sick, we try our best to not forget or leave anyone
behind, this is what makes us human in my
opinion. The compassion that we, as humans, are

able to have for one another is something that Nature doesnt possess. Nature
doesnt take into account feelings nor achievements in its plans, yet still creates a
system that is balanced, astonishing, diverse, unparalleled, and necessary.
Therefore, going against what nature intends brings forth grave consequences.
In todays fast-paced society we are hurrying either from one place to another or
hurrying to finishing one task to start another. We are always in a hurry and yet it
seems as though there is never enough time, so what do? We do we start to cut down
on our sleep to make time for other things that we deem more important than sleep.
Although we know that without sleep we wont be able to properly function, and how
harmful its to not sleep the other tasks present in our life seem of more value that
our own health and well being.
Even when we hit rock bottom,
we dont learn and say our
typical oh that will never
happen to me (us), we are
different we can handle it
phrase. Yet accidents due to
sleep deprivation that could
have been avoidable if we had
prioritize our health and not
skip those crucial hours of sleep
that our bodys so desperately needed keep on happening. David Dinges, the
scientist in charge of a NIH-funded sleep deprivation study at the University of
Pennsylvanias School of medicine, commented that inadequate sleep was one of the
contributing factors in Exxon Valdez oil spill, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island disaster,
and the 2003 Staten Island ferry crash. Although, its obvious that we will never
overcome nature and that nature will surely catch up to us in this aspect, we are still
determine to run away from it, as pointless as it may be.
We must learn to accept that sleep deprivation is a battle that we wont every win,
and that Natures plan isnt against us. That there is a reason for the how things work
in nature, but our stubborn and arrogant human nature keeps us pushing our limits
until we eventually succumb to sleep, and start our battle against nature all over
again once were awake.
