This artifact is a directed reading lesson intended for a Spanish II high

school class with a mix of 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. The lesson is part of
a unit involving the cultures of different Spanish speaking countries. The specific
topic targeted is the country of Chile. Included is the lesson, which holds the class
description, the lesson objective, the standards targeted, the performance
assessment, and the lesson procedure. This artifact demonstrates my
proficiency in this standard because I was able to plan instruction for many
different ability groups. I was very aware of what the students had to offer and
what their strengths and weaknesses were, so I tailored the instruction to meet
their needs. In this lesson, I was also able to use what students have previously
learned in their history class and place it into my Spanish class, showing that I was
able to use cross-disciplinary skills. I was also able to organize the lesson in a way
that was not difficult for students to follow. The lesson also demonstrates that I am
mindful of the curriculum and integrating the ACTFL Standards in order to provide a
successful learning experience for students. This artifact relates to positive impact
on student learning because it gives the students opportunities to read, write, and
speak about a topic that they are learning about. They have many different
opportunities throughout the lesson to practice their communication abilities. I also
go around the classroom and help the students when needed. This directed
reading lesson plan demonstrates the judging, planning, and teaching,
assessing, and reflecting components of the Planning-Teaching-Learning cycle
because I was able to create a lesson using what these students already know how
to do, which is reading and writing in the English language, in order to gain

knowledge of a Spanish speaking country. This artifact incorporates a large variety

of instructional reading strategies that can help the students read effectively in a
foreign language classroom.
