Western Europe was greatly impacted by the decline of

Roman influence.

The loss of a powerful, centralized government that maintained


law and order throughout the land affected the daily lives of every
day peoples.

Who will maintain the roads?


Who will protect the people?

Who will legislate the laws?


Who will enforce those laws?

Without the protection of the Roman Empire, Western


Europe became a very dangerous place.
I wish the Romans
were to protect
us!

Imagine a world where the United States had lost all its power and influence.
What might that world look like?

With less trade and travel, Europeans became isolated and


the exchange of ideas came to a halt.

The Germanic tribes began to slowly gain more and more


influence throughout western Europe spreading their culture.

Tribal chiefs maintained loyalty with their warriors by


rewarding them with land they had won in battle.

The concept of fealty is the basis of the feudal system which will
dominate Medieval life, both politically and economically.
