After the Anschluss with Austria, Hitler continued
to intimidate and bully other countries.
No country was able or willing to stand up to Hitlers
demands to take back all the former territories that had once belonged to Germany.
Even Stalin signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler
to put off hostilities until they were better prepared for war.
British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, met with
Hitler in Munich to work out an agreement on taking back Sudetenland (northern tip of Czechoslovakia)
However much we may sympathize
with a small nation confronted by a big and powerful neighbor, we cannot in all circumstances undertake to involve the whole British Empire in war simply on her account.

Chamberlain knew that Britain was unprepared to
defend Czechoslovakia and did his best to APPEASE Hitler by giving in to some of his demands.
My friends. . . There has come back from Germany peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time.
Many have criticized Chamberlain for not taking a
harder stance against Hitler, knowing that he would never be appeased and would continue to take over Europe piece by piece.
Winston Churchill would replace Chamberlain as PM,
as he did not support appeasement and believed that Britain needed to prepare for war.
