Week of Dec 24th to Dec 31st

CHRISTMAS IS A COMIN

Christmas is coming the goose is getting fat; please put a penny in the old mans hat.
If you havent got a penny, a hapenny will do.
If you havent got that then God Bless You!

I remember as a very little girl each year
my Mom would recite that old English verse to
me. I didnt quite understand it then but I liked
the rhythm of the poem. A half penny and a
penny were the lowest coins in England and I
assume worth almost nothing. That is where our
one cent coin gets its common name of penny
as it is made of copper as were the British coins,
neither of which is a part of their current coinage. This verse was most likely quite appropriate in its time and in our great depression
days, the days of my earliest youth. Nine or ten
of those coins would purchase a loaf of bread.
One penny would buy a big stick of candy or an
all day sucker.

While I was doing some computer research I came across some more interesting information, a portion of which I will share with
you. The following bits are direct quotes from
Mr. Internet --- Despite the tales of three wise
men paying homage to baby Jesus, the Bible
never gives a number. Matthews gospel refers
to merely wise men. (Could it have started
from there being three gifts mentioned?) Carols
began as an old English custom called Wassailing, toasting neighbours to a long life. There is
no reference to angels singing anywhere in the
Bible. (Its nice to think of a heavenly choir
of angels though.) Many theologians estimate
that Jesus wasnt born on December 25th but
sometime in September between 6 BC and 43
AD. Jesus was probably born in a cave and not
in a wooden stable, say Biblical scholars. While
many of our customs and forms of celebrating
Christmas have developed over the years and
blended from many ethnic cultures, we still
place the focus on Christs birth in not only our
worship services but our secular and family celebrations.

An e-mail buddy recently sent me a
message which, at the end, had some things to
be thankful for. I am sharing them with you but
with a bit of Sara slant.

Even though I clutch my blanket and
growl when the alarm rings, thank you Lord
that I can hear. There are many who are deaf.
--- Even though I keep my eyes closed against
the morning light as long as possible, thank
you Lord that I can see. Many are blind. --Even though I huddle in my bed and put off
rising, thank you Lord for that warm bed, and
the strength to rise. There are many who have
no bed. There are many who do not have the
strength to rise. --- Even though the first hour
of my day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast
is burned, tempers short and my children are
so loud, thank you Lord. - Even though some
of us are old and sometimes lonely, thank you
Lord for family and friends. There are many
who have no family or friends. Even though
our meal tables never look like those pictures
in magazines and the menu is sometimes (most
times) unbalanced, thank you Lord, for the food
we have. There are many who are hungry. --Even though the routine of our days is often monotonous, thank you Lord for the opportunity to
work. There are many who have no job. --- Even
though I grumble and bemoan my fate from day
to day and wish my circumstances were not so
modest, thank you Lord FOR LIFE!
This is the time of year we reminisce and plan
family celebrations but it is a time we should
continue being thankful and remembering oth-

Jaguar wrestling

Southeast Valley Varsity Jags lost 12 in two

forfeits, and no ground was gained with two,
double forfeits.
Spencer Johnson fought hard for his six
points with a fall time of four minutes over Garrett Simmons.
Kaelen Lundberg earned six by forfeit.
Tom Nahnsen, Trey Lawrence and Bryce Scott
earned six each for the team.

Noah Tucker signs for Southwestern...

Bill Huntington, left, head coach at Southwestern Community College for Cross Country,
visits Southeast Valley High School, Monday, Dec. 15, to sign Noah Tucker, Cross Country
and Track at SV. Noahs father Steve Tucker, middle, was there for the signing. Travis Nuss,
right, is the head coach for Cross Country and Track at Southeast Valley.

Three SV wrestlers place first at MV Tourney

The Southeast Valley wrestlers made
their way to west to Mapleton to participate in
the 10 team Maple Valley-Anthon Oto Invite.
Once again , the Jags were shorthanded missing a key parts of their line-up possibly costing
them valuable team points.

On the other hand, the Jags placed five
out of seven in the finals with three wrestlers
claiming top honors. Spencer Johnson(12-1)
dominated the 113 lb. class with three falls, pinning David Hibbing(HMS) in the second period
claiming his second consecutive title.
Riley Rittgers (11-2, 170) cruised to the
finals with a quick semi-final pin over Grant
Ortmeir(ABC) and locked horns with tough
Daniel Sommerlot of Pocahontas Area for the
second time in three days. Riley squeaked out
a hard fought 4-2 decision Thursday night but
won a more convincing 8-2 decision Saturday
claiming his first MV-AO championship.
Third seeded Bryce Scott(4-2) came out of
nowhere in the 195 lb. bracket pinning his way
through the tournament getting the fall over Jeremy Williams(Poky) in the second period.
Third seeded Trey Lawrence(7-6)lost a tough
4-2 decision in the finals at 132 lbs. to Eric
Wedemeyer of Manson finishing with runner up
honors.
Tom Nahnsen(9-4, 182) pinned his first round
opponent; recorded a tech fall(15-0) en route to
his championship run. Tom fell short of his title
run losing to Dillon Manhart of Tri-Center.
Coltan Klingson, 106, had a nice day for the
Jags, pinning Ethan Wright(HMS) in the second
period finishing in third place and Hwt. Matt
Ross did not place.
Overall the guys wrestled really well. You
cant ask much better placing five out of the seven guys in the finals but they were disappointed
knowing they could have placed higher if we
had all of our guys participating. They finished
in fifth place but only half a point from fourth,
12 from third and 16.5 points from second.

Madaline (left) and Haileigh Patton performed in the Nutcracker Ballet in Ames earlier this month.

Former Gowrie
residents in ballet

Two former Gowrie residents enjoyed being in the cast of the Nutcracker Ballet at Stephens Auditorium in Ames. Madaline (13) and
Haileigh (10) Patton were in each of the 3 performances held the weekend of December 13
and 14.
Madaline performed en pointe as a snowflake and as a Spanish dancer during the grand
celebration at Candyland as well as in the fast
paced Irish dance segment. It was her 6th year
as a member of the cast.
Haileigh was in the opening scene as well
as the Irish segment. It was her 4th year in the
cast of the large production. Both girls are the
daughters of Scott and Deb Patton of Nevada.
The classical ballet was first presented in
Russia in 1892 and is a traditional holiday event
around the world.

Seventh grade wins 27 -10;

Eighth grade loses 16 -12
Both teams fought hard. . .

The Southeast Valley JH Girls Basketball teams played South Central Calhoun at
Burnside Tuesday night. The 7th grade picked
up a solid 27-10 victory with Makenzie Crampton and Cassie Bergland leading the way with
eight points each.

The Jags got outstanding wing play
from Viatris Scott and solid all around play
from Jaynie Ferrari. The 7th grade improves to
3-2 on the season.

The 8th grade dropped a tought 16-12
decision to the Titans however I could not be
more proud of the effort these young ladies
gave against a very good SCC team.

This was a true team effort with the girls
fighting to the very end, The first thing worth
mentioning is the outstanding defensive efforts
by, Kasey Lundberg, Sammy Alphs, Shelby
Cummins, Maddi Jaescke and Lanie Nelson.

The Jags also got outstanding post play
-from Cassidy Lambert and solid guard play
-from Morgan Castenson. The 8th grade is now
2-3 on the season.

Jaguars fall to Bulldogs

The Southeast Valley 8th grade lost
- to Ogden 39-34. The Jags led for most of the
- game, but were unable to get the offense going
d to finish out the game.
-
The Jags had a 7-2 lead at the end of the
3 first quarter and used solid defense and steals to
gain an early advantage. The Jags went into the
- halftime break with an 18 -11 lead.
d
Struggling to get the ball in the basket
t in the third quarter proved to be costly for the
r Jags as they fell behind for the first time 23-20.
In a wild high scoring fourth quarter the Jags

Titans escape
Jaguars, 71-63

THE GOWRIE NEWS

Davis layup, the Jags would find themselves

within seven.
After a foul to give the Titans a point, senior
forward Skylar Warehime would find an easy
layup to bridge the gap to six with 33 seconds
left. Sadly, an offensive foul on the Jags would
nullify a King three pointer. After a turnover,
sophomore Dakota Jaeschke would head back
to the line with 12 seconds left. Luck would run
out for the Jags, as Ludwig would draw the foul
and seal a Titan win.
We need to work better, and [West BendMallard] will pick us up on the full court man
to man, Johnson said, heading into Mondays
contest with the Wolverines. We really need to
get our press breaks a lot cleaner and smoother
than we were. We were working a few new kids
in, we got out of position a few times. So I think
if we can clean that up and get some better passing angles, work on our fast break when teams

better.

loss on Dec. 15, when West Bend-Mallard (1-4) points for the Jaguars.
comes to Gowrie. This will be the second contest in 10 days between the Jags and the Wolverines.

In a rare Saturday basketball game, the

Southeast Valley Jaguars (3-2) saw their three
game winning streak snapped at the hands of
South Central Calhoun (4-2). Using a huge third
quarter and early fourth quarter to their advantage, the Titans defeated the Jaguar boys in
Rockwell City on Dec. 13, 71-63.
The Jaguars and Titans began the game
locked in a heated defensive battle, as the Jags
took a small 4-2 lead with 4:29 left in the first
quarter. SCC would respond in kind with a senior guard Zach Ludwig three pointer, as both
squads would exchange leads until a Conner
Conrad jumper would tie the game with two
minutes remaining in the first quarter. By the
first buzzer, the Titans would hold a minuscule
13-12 lead.
South Central Calhoun would apply full
court pressure at the start of the second quarter, as the Titans took a ten point lead with four
minutes left in the first half. The Jaguars would
claw back into the game, as a Titan foul would
send Conner Conrad to the charity stripe.
Trailing by four with 2:17 left, junior Logan
Boerner would draw the foul while a full court
press gave the lead back to the teal and black.
Going into the break, the Jags made use of Titan
miscues and attained a 32-28 halftime lead.
The Jaguars would continue to press early
in the third quarter, as junior guard Cade King
would knock in a shot from three-land to give
the Jags a 37-30 lead with six minutes remaining. The Titans would respond to gain back a
one point lead with four minutes left, before
grabbing a 49-43 advantage at the end of the
third quarter.
I thought that [South Central Calhoun]
were a lot more aggressive in the second half,
Head Coach Kyle Johnson said. We were a
step slow, we are a little out of place here and
there. Overall, I think they outhustled and outplayed us in the second half.
While the Titans would garner a 52-44 lead
with six minutes left in the ball game, Southeast Valley would be hampered by a full court
press and an unforgiving rim. The Titans would
call a timeout with 4:37 left in the contest, Conrad would reply with a three pointer to keep the
Jags within six.
The Jaguars would not go away, as King
Erica Nordin of Gowrie was one of the St.
would visit the free throw line twice to keep Lucia candidates at the 2014 Lucia FestivSoutheast Valley within eight. After a Myles ity of Light. One of the organizers, Kristina

points for the Jaguars.

The Swedish festival celebrating St. Lucia

was held Saturday, December 6, at the Stratford
Lutheran Church. The pageant was presented
by the Swedish Foundation of Iowas Swede
Bend Settlement.
Candidates for the honor of being crowned
St. Lucia were required to have Swedish ancestry. Two Gowrie girls were among the 5 candidates. Erica Nordin, daughter of Matt and Stacey Nordin, had Nordin ancestors who settled
in Lost Grove Township in Webster County.
Roslyn Redman, daughter of Gayle Redman,
had Liljegren ancestors who also settled in Lost
Grove Township. Roslyn was unable to attend
the ceremony.
Sierra Miller of Boxholm was crowned the
2014 St. Lucia. Her name was chosen from a
bowl containing the names of the candidates.
During the program, traditional Christmas
carols were sung in both English and Swedish.
The story of the martyred St. Lucia was read
noting her charitable and kind acts of service.
A warm time of fellowship was shared after the
program.

Titans, turnovers
down Jaguar girls

In a battle of early season Twin Lakes Conference heavyweights, it was a technical knockout in favor of an experienced South Central
Calhoun squad. The No. 4 Titans (7-0) used
good shooting early from senior forward Haley
Birks and a solid defense to defeat the Jaguar
girls (4-2), 68-28 on Dec. 13.
[South Central Calhoun] played great defense and theyre very big, Amber Sorenson,
assistant head coach, said. Sometimes I think
we just got a little shook up, maybe should have
passed the ball a little bit more, and pulled up a
little bit sooner. But its all things that we can
learn from.
The game was scoreless until 6 minutes left
in the first quarter, until Birks would score the
first six points of the ballgame. SCC would keep
scoring and take a 9-2 lead early, as Birks would
keep the Jaguar girls at bay with another three
along with a Jaguar turnover.
This would help the Titans garner a 10 point
lead with 2:20 left in the first. The Jaguar girls
would continue to struggle, as the Titans led
20-6 by the first buzzer.
In the second quarter, Jaguar girls would fall
into a 20 point deficit in the early season quarter
due to sloppy play, as the Titans would keep the
Jags from reaching double digits until a minute
left in the first half.
Coming back from the break, the Titans continued to hassle the Jaguars and win the turnover battle. By the end of the third quarter, South
Central Calhoun had the game well in hand.
We must learn from our mistakes and not
hang our heads, Sorenson said. Were not going to dwell on it, because its not going to get
us anywhere. We dont have a lot of time, so
were going to come back on Monday and make
a statement.
The girls will aim to snap their two game
losing streak at home against a winless West
Bend-Mallard squad (0-5) on Dec. 15 in Gowrie.
South Central Calhoun will travel to Carroll on
Dec. 16.
