SIPEKNEKATIK APPEALS COLCHESTER MUNICIPALITYS DECISION TO
DUMP FRACKING WASTEWATER INTO DEBERT SEWER SYSTEM
(Indian Brook First Nation, N.S.) Sipeknekatik Chief and Council are appealing a
decision made by the Municipality of Colchester County to dispose of fracking
wastewater through the Debert sewer system.
The municipality granted approval to Atlantic Industrial Services (AIS) to discharge
treated hydraulic fracturing wastewater into the Debert sewer system on December 10,
2014
Sipeknekatik Chief Rufus Copage sent a letter of appeal to the municipalitys Chief
Administrative Officer, Ramesh Ummat, on December 19, 2014.
Sipeknekatik strongly opposes the transporting and disposal of fracking wastewater into
the Debert sewer system or anywhere within Mikmaw territory, Chief Copage said
Tuesday.
The protection of water is important to Sipeknekatik and stewardship of the
environment is of paramount importance, he added.
Sipeknekatik Chief and Council have requested the Municipality of Colchester County
to reverse its decision and deny approval for the discharge of fracking wastewater into the
Debert sewer system.
Sipeknekatik is the second largest Mikmaw band in Nova Scotia with more than 2,500
band members. Approximately 1,200 band members reside in Indian Brook First Nation.
