The Aztecs

The Aztecs settled on an island in Lake Texcoco, in the Valley of Mexico , in 1325. The Aztecs capital was
Tenochtitlan, which stood on what is now known as Mexico city. In the 1400s, Aztecs warriors started to
conquer the other people of the region and they forced them to pay taxes and to pay tribute. The
Aztecs grew rich from the tribute.

Priests were really important in society. Most of the people in the Aztec empire were farmers, they made
floating gardens called chinampas, the grew corn, squash, and beans.

Tenochtitlan was a great capital city, it had wide streets and canals and it had huge temples and many
markets most filled with food, gold, and feathers. The emperor and nobles lived In palaces with slaves to
serve them.

It is said that the major Aztec weapon could chop off the head of a horse with only one blow, they had
powerful weapons. Aztecs doctors were able to make more than 1000 medicines from plants.
