An Early City-State - Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities in the world at the time - Teotihuacan became part of the thriving trade network - Their largest trading element was obsidian - Obsidian- a green or black volcanic glass found in the Valley of Mexico and used to make sharp weapons - The city declined 2. Toltecs Take Over - Year 900-1000, new tribes takes over, the Toltecs - Toltec ruler, Topiltzin, tried to change the Toltec religion - Quetzalcoatl, God who was the Feathered Serpent - Aztecs rose and fell just like the Teoithuacán
The Aztec Empire
- Mexico got its’ name from Mexica - Huitzilopochtli told them to find a city of their own - Where an eagle perched with a snake in the mouth - Aztecs founded Tenochtitlán in 1325
1. Aztecs Grow Stronger
- The Aztecs created an empire - They joined with Texcoco and Tlacopan to form the Triple Alliance - Aztecs were like every empire: Tribute and Obedience
2. Nobles Rule Aztec Society
- Classes of Aztec Society: - Military leaders and Nobles had great powers and wealth - Merchant, Soldiers, Artisans and Farmer were the middle class who owned their own land - Merchant acted as spies for the empire gaining wealth for themselves - People captured from cities near by- Enslaved people that were captives who did many different jobs
Tenochtitlan: A Planned CIty
- The Capital, where the Aztecs lived was called Tenochtitlan - One of the biggest cities in the world - Montezuma I > Emperor - They had a huge market(in the middle of the city) where they sold their products - They also had floating gardens where they grew things to feed people - They had the great temple in the center of the city (where they sacrificed people) Religion Rules Aztec Life - They worshipped around 1,000 gods (polytheistic)
1. Religious Practices - They had elaborate public ceremonies
2. Sacrifices for the Sun God
- They sacrificed humans everyday(1000 a year) for the sun god - People who were victims of human sacrifice, were slaves, criminals and conquest of war - They went to war not always for land, but to capture people to sacrifice
Problems in the Aztec Empire
- In the early 1500’s, the Aztecs started to weaken - A lot of angry empires and people started rebelling against them - The spaniards started to defeat them and recruit people from their empire
