Welding Units offer two ISO 9001 flange design services:

ASME VIII formula based calculations for Weld Neck, Swivel, Blind and Anchor flanges.
Finite element analysis for any application.

The ASME VIII calculations consider internal pressure, external axial load and bending moment. Torsion and
shear loads are taken into account but are excluded when analysing joint separation. The ASME design code
is particularly conservative.

finite element analysis

The 2D FE non-linear analysis of a flange uses axi-symmetric elements to adopt the
characteristics of a 360 revolution. The loads are applied in two stages. Firstly the bolt load is applied, then
internal pressure, axial load and bending moment (as an equivalent axial load) are added. The results enable
deformation and stress and strain values to be analysed as well
as the degree of joint separation.

finite element analysis

The 3D FE non-linear analysis of a flange uses solid
elements constrained for axi-symmetric analysis.
The 3D analysis goes a step further than the 2D, with the ability
to model the bending moment accurately and take into account the effect of bolt holes on the stiffness of the
structure. This is the most accurate method of flange analysis available.
All calculations are performed at Welding Units under the Lloyds Register approved ISO 9001 quality system.
For all three design systems, costs are kept low by having all flange types pre-modelled.
