Unit 2 Quantitative Variables (Chps. 4-5)

Big Idea:

The distributions of quantitative variables can be visualized with histograms, stem-and-leaf plots, dot
plots, and box plots. Descriptions of the distributions should include a discussion of center, spread,
shape, and unusual features. Parallel boxplots are useful for comparing distributions of quantitative
variables. The center and spread of distributions can be described numerically with the following
statistics: mean and standard deviation or median and IQR. The median and IQR are more resilient to
outliers and skewness.

Skills:

Construct histograms by hand and with the TI-84 Lessons 1,2

Provide a general description of shape, center, spread, and unusual features Lesson 3
Construct stem-and-leaf plots, with and without split stems- Lesson 4
Compare distributions with side by side stem-and-leaf plots Lessons 4, 5a
Construct dot plots and line plots Lesson 5b
Construct regular box plots and modified box plots by hand and with the TI-84 Lessons 6, 7, 8
Give specific descriptions of shape, center, spread, and unusual features given a box plot of a
distribution Lessons 6,7, 8
Compare distributions of quantitative variables with parallel box plots Lesson 9
Calculate the mean and standard deviation of a distribution and use them when appropriate to
describe its center and spread Lessons 10, 11, Activity
Describe the effect of outliers and skewness on mean and standard deviation Lesson 11
