ASHLEY WALKERS

MEDIA INTRODUCTION

ME!
Hello All my name is Ashley Walker. Im 27 years old. I Graduated
from the University of California in 2009 with my degree in American
Studies emphasis in U.S. history from 1800-1970. I am now at the end
of my Masters degree (3 months to go!) and Ive very excited to start
my new career as a teacher.

PROFESSIONAL GOAL
As of right now my professional goal is to become a teacher in a small
school where I can make a difference. Im mostly looking into different
types of charter schools, instead of the public school system. I have

nothing against the public school system, I just have experience and
family ties to the non traditional school system. My goal is to work
somewhere that first I enjoy and second I can make a difference in
students educational experience. I had great teachers while growing up

and I hope to become one too!

EXPERIENCE WITH
TAKING ASSESSMENTS
As a student I have come across all type of assessment during my educational
career. Formative, summative, you name it Ive been assessed in it. However, I must
admit my experiences have not all been good. The star 9 test in California is a test

that we took ever year from 1st grade on., and the test I probably took most often.
Im a terrible test taker an a excellent student, which while I was younger caused
teachers to question my ability to learn. It was nott until one teacher took the time
to adjust my assessment that he saw that I would become very nervous while
testing. He proceeded to find alternative ways to test me which resulted in high test
scores on my part and a better learning experience all around.

CONTINUED
The star 9 test was never a test I did well on my overall school
grades always seemed to be higher then the state test. This test for me
didn'tt show how good of a student I was or how well I applied what
I had learned in the classroom in real life. This always made me feel
not as smart as other students and greatly affect my learning.

IN FORMAL SCHOOLING?

Overall I believe that assessment in formal schooling should be

used as a tool to help students demonstrate what they know and can
apply in the real world. Not something that test a students ability to
memorize terms and numbers for a single test, and then later forget
about it. Assessment should be another way to help students learn
and grow in their own educational experience, and not a means for

school funding.
