Standard of competence :
To understand the meaning of simple transactional and interpersonal
conversations interactively and non interactively in formal and non formal
situations to communicate in daily life and/ or academic contexts.

Basic Competence :
Listening
1.1. To understand the meanings of simple and short transactional and
interpersonal conversations explicitly using the following language
functions : expressing and showing certainty and uncertainty,
expressing and responding to doubt, asking for repetition, showing
attention, and expressing amazement.

Transactional dialogues
Lisa and Tiwi are on the phone. They talk about a plan to visit Andi who
is sick.
Lisa : Hello. Can I talk to Tiwi, please ?
Tiwi : Tiwi is speaking here. Whos this ?
Lisa : Its me, Lisa
Tiwi : Hi, LIs, whats up ?
Lisa : Well, I want to confirm our appointment to visit Andi. Can you
make it this afternoon ?
Tiwi : Sure, I can
Lisa : Well go at 3 oclock, right ?
Tiwi : Certainly
Lisa : Then, Ill pick you up at two forty-five.
Tiwi : Fine.
Lisa : Okay. See you this afternoon. Bye
Tiwi : Bye-bye.
Interpersonal dialogues
Ratih is walking through the living room. There, she finds her father
sitting on the sofa holding something.
Ratih
: Hi, Dad.
Mr. Indra : Hi, sweetie. Where have you been ?
Ratih
: Well, I went to Listys house to study together. And hmm
whats in your hand, Dad? Is that your new mobile phone?
Mr. Indra : Yes, it is.
Ratih
: Can I have a look? Wow, its a good stuff. Dad, do you
mind if I use it to send an SMS ?
Mr. Indra : No problem
Ratih
: Really, Dad ?
Mr. Indra : Sure, its all right. But be careful, its still new.
Ratih
: I will, Dad. Thank you.

The following are some more examples of expressions for showing


certainty, doubt, repetition and surprises. Read aloud and study the
expressions.
Teacher read a text about how to response a question about certainty
and uncertainty.
1. Anna is talking to her brother, Andy about the weather.
Anna
: It is cloudy. Are you sure you will go out ?
Andy
: Why not. Its Saturday night.
Anna
: Its going to rain.
Andy
: Im not sure. There are stars on the sky.
2. Anna is going to her grandfathers house . She is riding her
motorcycle with her brother.
Anna
: Are you sure, its the way to our grandfathers house?
Andy
: Certainly. This way!
Certainty:
Im sure about it.
Im quite sure that he told the truth.
Im absolutely sure about the news.
Im no doubt about it.

Responses to expressions of doubt which show concern as well:
I think you dont need to be worried about it.

I am sorry. Would you mind repeating what you just said?
What?. Could you repeat what you just said?
